Celebrating 11 Years and 170k Miles

So, last week, my D3 passed 11 years in my ownership and 170k miles. I have to say it has been a joy to drive and own, helped by this Forum. It is now in partial retirement and after several years of planning to buy an old Land Rover to fiddle with, I have decided I already have one - the D3 Rolling with laughter

Overall, this is by far the best car I have owned in 36 years of driving. Given a choice of our newish A3 or 05 Disco to drive to work - I would take the Disco (except it is now in partial retirement Big Cry ).

I may have been lucky over the years, perhaps helped by easy motorway driving and preventative maintenance, but am pleased to have avoided the issues of some. I have one small noise that is bugging me at the moment, but will sort that out.

So, if you are reading this forum and were thinking that Discovery ownership is full of problems and costs, think again - there are good news stories as well; they just don't get quite as much airtime!

Hope I don't live to regret this post!

Mine clocked 150,000 today on the way back from Cleveleys. Cost me a bob or two over the past 11 months but enjoyed every minute of the 9,000 miles I have done (Not enjoyed parting with the money though Big Cry )

It's a great story Thumbs Up

I'd like to be able to say the same thing in 11 years. 13 years to retirement would be even better Very Happy

To be fair, the choice between an A3 and a D3 is a nice easy one!

What makes it even better is that when I selected the model back in 2005, I went for the "S". It felt like the poor mans D3 because I did not choose the leather seats. Whilst I sometimes wish I had leather trim, it is only with the passage of time that I realised how many "extras" were included in the early "S" model that were charged for in later years. Anything lacking climate control, cruise control, Xenons etc lacks the refinement of my 05 S.

Thumbs Up

9 years and 101,000. Passed its MOT today, service and some warranty work. Not as expensive as I had expected. Best car ever.
SAAB 9-3 Convertible (bought before they all disappear)
D3 TDV6 HSE 2007 Black with Alpaca interior (gone and much missed)
Uncle Ray Wheel Protector (best accessory ever bought bar none)
SAAB 9-3 Sportwagon (daily driver)
Ford Galaxy (traded in for Discovery, less said about this car the better)
Saab 900 Green 5 door (gone missed)
SAAB 900 Black 3 door (gone missed)

Mine also passes the MOT this year without a single Advisory. That is a great feeling and helps justify the time taken on maintenance.

Like Barn1e mine is a base 'S' model with auto, air suspension, TR and fabric seating. She has now completed 123 000 miles (198 000 km) since purchase in January 2006.

The only downside was the engine failure at 142 000 km but the replacement (NOT supplied by JLRA) has performed well. The other usual replacements have been done and I envision this vehicle to be my preferred mode of transport for quite a few more years.

It is easily the best tow vehicle I have ever owned (50 years of driving) and the quality of ride and passenger comfort is right up there too.

Of course I would like to replace it with a D4 but cannot justify the outlay whilst parts (that are best considered consumables; wishbones, bushes, and other air suspension components) are still readily available.

Overall customer satisfaction has exceeded expectations. Well done, original designers!

The old girl is on her third engine...
* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

Del, I am very envious of your trip to Norway etc. I have just been asked to assist our company's teams in the Nordics. Not sure how the company will respond if I ask to drive rather than fly to meetings

Are you still on your original set of injectors, Barn1e? Or have you replaced some/all of them in that time?

Steve, I am still on the same set of injectors Shocked They are all within the normal range and I monitor them with my Nanocom. For about 4 of the 11 years I did use 2 stroke as an additive, but now tend to use the more expensive diesel as my mileage has dropped. No idea whether that has made a difference to injector wear.
