Just out of curiosity does anyone know if the crankshafts usually fail in the same place?

Hi
of all the snapped cranks I have seen (plenty) they all snap IN EXACTLY THE SAME PLACE
on TDV6 with the auto box. On the TDV6 manual 6-speed, I know of only one and it snapped right at the back. That was caused by abuse.
Even on the new SDV6 3.0 with the 8-speed box this seems to happen. Check here:
The pics posted are where they break, both on 2.7 TDV6 and TDV6 3.0 and SDV6 3.0. Even to the point where you can hold the front part of a 2.7 crank to the rear part of a snapped 3.0 crank and they will be a matching fit. EX AFRICA SEMPER ALIQUID NOVI

Very interesting George; it would be interesting to know:-
If your experience is replicated elsewhere.
If you have any explanation of why more vehiches with auto gearboxes, rather than manual, snap their crankshatfts. Could it simply be a question of more auto D3s than manual D3s?

Does anyone mind if I send these pictures to our failure analysis team? I have a good idea what's caused that but want it confirmed. If anyone has a failed crank they can send me even better.

Definitely a weakness on that oil passage for a start. The beach marks on the breaks show that it's definitely a travelling break but it's difficult to tell the origin from a photo

Not pretending to be an expert on this but just putting some ideas out for discussion, if they all fail in the same place and, from the pictures, in a similar manner is the underlying cause;
1) Poor original design?
2) Individual casting faults?
or
3) Some sort of harmonic vibration problem arising from a failing crankshaft damper or out of balance torque converter etc?
Does anyone know if the other vehicles that use this engine in its various guises such as Citroen, Peugeot, Jaguar, etc have a similar incidence of catastrophic crankshaft failure?

Or a combination of all three!! Breaks from torsional vibration pretty much always have a 45 degree fracture like what is happening here..........need to get my paws on one of these cranks

Hello Fatboy, I am sure Georgewould be fine with you sending off those photos: I have sent him a PM on our home forum in SA. He may be out of the country or traveling now
Very interested to get whatever info we can on the TDV6 crank breakages.

Mine is a 15 plate with 21000 miles when it failed, Bank holiday friday, got it back after a week and a half, felf like i had run over something when it happened, asked landrover several times what the cause was, no joy, asking them to extend the warranty on the engine, not getting far there eitherDisco 4 HSE Lux

A shot in the dark, but what is the firing order of these engines. Are two pistons next to each other firing consecutively causing stress on one part of the crank.

Crank issues 2005 model
Hi All
just curious to know if anyone has come across a 2004/5 model TDV6 with a snapped crank but with bearings intact?
I personally have never heard of such an incidence, but plenty from 2007 model onwards.EX AFRICA SEMPER ALIQUID NOVI
