Help - probably engine failure but could do with help
At the end of last year i inherited my late fathers Discovery 3. A vehicle which he adored and ensured was maintained very well. It has done a good number of miles 225k and having put an additional 3k on the clock has now stopped working which i suspect is engine failure.
whilst travelling at 65mph up hill there was a slow loss of power, I dropped it into a lower gear suspecting a headwind as i reached the crest of a hill but the engine just stopped and the oil and battery lights came on. The hdc light breifly lit and then there was nothing more. temp fine, no faults shown but she woudl not fire. The engine will turn over but sounds rough - if given enough revs it will start and tick over just at 500rpm but if the clutch is engaged it just cuts out.
Can anyone suggest what this might be and if anyone might be able to assist. (car is in Edinburgh) Obviously the cost of a new engine likely more than the value of the car, however I woudl love to keep the car on the road if feasible.
thank you

Have you tried plugging in a fault code reader into it and reading any faults.

It sounds like fuel starvation from your description, if the engine turns over easily.

Mikey, do you mean a broken crank or some other crank-related issue?--

Normally, a crank sensor fault is logged when the cam + crank do not synchronise. Either as simple as a faulty sensor, or in varying degrees of severity up to a replacement engine (broken belt or oil pump/snapped crank/broken camshaft)My D3 Build Thread

Faulty Engine
I have a similar problem.
I had a refurbished engine fitted at 106K miles, and have done about 20k miles on this engine. I was coming home and accelerated up a hill when i started tol loose power and the engine made a funny noise. I checked the oil and it appeared to be empty but i had no warning lights or increase in temperature gauge. It will start but runs rough and sounds like it is miss firing or not running on all cylinders.
A local LR engineer was passing and put his diagnostic on the car and it indicated low compression in cylinder 5 (don't know what the error code was). Any thoughts on the problem?? my local indie garage thinks its an engine failure but needs to do some more tests.
I can't afford another replacement engine. I have seen companies advertised £3650 for supply and fit reconditioned engine, i'm nervous going down this route. Does anyone have any experience of this or could recommend a garage that does this work?
Whats a non-runner D3, HSE, 58 plate, 127k miles worth?

The op said his engine will start, that rules out cam belt issues. Sounds like a fuel problem?

I couldn't see any oil leaks, but when the car was recovered there was oil on the front left swing arm which looked thick and discoloured (Brown ish) but no signs of water in engine on dip stick.
