A break from the usual snapped cranks and oil pump housings

Had an unusual D3 in this week needing a new engine. No woosy busted oil pump housing, or snapped crankshafts here. Nope, it decided it would have a drinking problem instead. It's own oil!

Internal oil seal failure in the turbo......(we recovered a litre of oil from the intercooler, plus it was choked up with oil sludge, every cylinder had half an inch of oil in it). Apparently it surged a few times in a big way before going bang, and the owner managed to wrestle it the the hard shoulder

There was only 2litres of oil left in the sump. A very poorly little beastie indeed. Sad

It seemed so. Heard of a few D3 turbos going pop, but not seen or heard of one eating the whole engine like this before.

Definitely seen and heard of the issue in other diesels though!

This one I think will serve as a reminder that the intercooler needs a regular clean out. And if you have unexpected oil loss, with nothing visible externally, get it checked.

I had a V8 d1 many years ago 3.9ltr and that would empty the sump faster than the fuel tank, traded it in before the problem was found, no idea where oil was going as it didn't smoke

I had an Astra like that. 1 litre of oil every week, approx 300 miles...

No leaks on the ground, no smell of burnt oil, no smoke out the back, emissions @ MOT time were save the planet clean. Never did get to the bottom of it either Confused

This one had the signs there, if only someone competent had seen them. Looked like both intercooler hoses had been replaced very recently, and where the big long one had split, there was oil spray all over the right hand side of the intercooler and radiator. Not just a little, but lots.

Looked like someone had decided that the way forward with the oil loss was heavier weight oil too.
