Bakerstreet - New to me D3 HSE

Greetings everyone. I’ve been a long time lurker here and spent a lot of time reading various threads. Joined a few years ago, but haven’t posted much, because I didn’t own one. Well as of Friday I’m now the proud owner of an early 2.7 HSE in Adriatic blue metallic with the beige interior. As far as I can tell the only options are the Logic7 stereo, towbar and chrome side steps. Steering wheel has also been retrimmed (it's very nice)

I’ve been into cars all my life and I believe that if you are into cars, then you will always be drawn to 4x4s at some point. At the age of 11 or 12, my Dad took me to the London motor show. We saw an early Discovery and I took home a brochure and in that brochure, was a three door with the compass graphics and two Scuba Divers sat on the back. I wanted that car.

The D3 isn’t my only Land Rover. Four years ago I bought a 1983 Series 3 van body with the awful diesel engine. Truth be told, I should have spent more money on that, but it's been a long term project.

Anyways, back to the D3. Due to having a 18 month old and a wife who occasionally works weekends, viewing was always hard work and I only ever viewed two. I chose this one as it had a fully stamped book and a decent amount of invoices with car including belt change, diff and prop replacement and numerous bushes and suspension components. Its also running Michelin Lattitudes (£180 a corner) and that shows an owner who cares about the maintenance!

Short term plans:
Remove the chrome side tubes (Don’t like them)
Replace the IO Play bluetooth kit with a parrot MKi9200 or Asteroid and a KRAM cable so I can get music from phone through all the speakers.
Fit Dog guard and divider
Basic Service (Oil change, Air filter, oil filter, cabin filter)
Re-attach the flapping plastic trim on the drivers’ door
Transmission Flush

Long Term Plan:
Fit Cooper Discoverer LTZ tyres (recon I have 3-4k in the current set)
Full waxoyl (or similar treatment)
Full leather treatment
Full machine polish (Too many cheap car washes. Lots of swirls)

I’m really happy with it. This is literally my dream car. Yes Ferraris are nice, but I’ve wanted a Discovery nearly all of my adult life. I could have got a D2 with less miles, but the interior never did much for me and IMO the D3 will go down in LR history as an iconic design. I desperately wanted the silver with limo tints and beige interior, but the two that came up for sale, I just couldn’t get to them quick enough Sad

Drive home was 160 miles and any drive home with new (used) car is always nerve wracking and knowing the big things that can go wrong with a D3, it was even more so. It didn’t miss a beat. When I was searching I was never that bothered by options on the HSE as it had everything I needed as standard. However the Logic7 is the best stereo I have ever heard in a car. The only issue that has appeared is the rear parking sensors are emitting a constant beep. Seems to be a common issue.

Here are a few pics. Expect more posts from me as the warning lights start to pop up Smile

Thanks Smile

Getting the new Parrot Bluetooth kit fitted this afternoon complete with the cable that feeds it straight to the amp. Looking forward to that as I was getting bored of listening to the Radio.

In the process of getting some quotes for an oil and filter change on the gearbox. First garage didn't advise doing a power flush.

Bit of update.

Had the gearbox oil filter changed and had a metal sump fitted. May get it power flushed in the future. Can't say I noticed any difference. Main reason I got it changed was because I noticed a slight fluctuation in the revs when I was on the motorway. Only saw it once.

Also I couldn't see any sign of it being changed in the history. Thought it would be best to err on the side of caution and get it done.

Car was also sinking to the bump stops after 72 hours or so. This forum led me to the valve block and the garage confirmed that when they plugged it. Had the Valve block changed at the same time as the oil change. That didn't cure it, so the forum suggests a leak at the pipes or the tank, so will get specialist to investigate. Bit frustrating, but its driving fine and the car raises its self to correct height when you start it.

Had a Parrot MKi9200 fitted complete wth KAM cable, so it feeds straight into the amp. Really pleased with the result. Used the same guy thats fitted my last two Parrot kits. Very reasonable at £245n all in.

We have a Greyhound and he really does need a dog guard to stop him dribbling over our 18 month old and the back seats. They are £130 new and to be honest I'd rather put that money in a pot for repairs than a dog guard. Thankfully I found one with a poor description on Ebay and I managed to bag it for £20. Bargain!!

Next on the list
- Fit tow bar mounted bike carrier (Should be here in the next couple of days)
- A clean
- Re-attach trim on drivers door
- Purchase a Boot tray

I've been in touch with a chap on the D3/D4 user group about any updates available and there are quite a few, but I'm not sure I want to do any mods this year. May wait till its passed its next MOT (Feb next year) before I start modding.

Always knew I wanted the beige interior. With the three sunroofs, its such a light and airy place to sit Smile

Ideally, I'd have gone for the silver bodywork with limo tints and the beige interior, but they were rare in my price range.

Bit of a small update. The wheel centre caps were well past their best. Very faded, scratched and you could barely see the LR logo.

Bought myself four new caps on amazon. Quality seemed good and they certainly looked much better than the originals.

I was really panicking about jacking the car up as I have read a few horror stories on the net about these vehicles being difficult to jack up due to the air suspension.

Turned out it wasn’t that tricky. I put the car into off road height and used my trolly jack along with several blocks of wood to get it to the required height. Also had an axle stand under the car just in case.

The other reason for getting the wheels off was so I could inspect the discs and pads. Pads on the back are pretty low, but the there is plenty of pad material on the fronts and car actually stops quite well which suggests discs are good. Probably going to replace the pads and discs on the back.

Few pics of the replacement of the centre caps. Wheels look much better for not a lot of outlay.

I've done about 1500 miles in the car now and I still love it. Its taken the family to centre parcs, Gatwick, LRO show, the zoo, Dorset and several trips to tip. I think the wife even secretly likes it. The centre parcs trip highlighted what a superb load lugger it is. back seats were clear, boot was full and we had a bike rack on the tow bar. Previous family holidays involved us filling every available space in what ever car we had.

Its being serviced on Monday, so I'll do another update for that too.

Mine drops after about 72hours I always thought this was normal. Mine will drop slightly as soon as it's locked

Yes mine is an HSE. It might have Bluetooth, but even if it did, you still can't stream music to it from a phone and short of ripping the entire lot out and replacing with a single double din, the parrot combined with the direct interface to the HK amp is the most cost effective solution for music streaming.
