Red Triangle and low oil indicator lights

Hi all have just noticed my red triangle and low oil light on the dash does not light up
on the instrument panel when the ignition is turned on
is this just a fuse or is it some more worrying

Assuming all doors are closed, once the self test of all the lights is over (about one second) I am left with the battery symbol, the parking brake symbol (assuming it is applied) and the amber triangle which is the attention getter for the "Press brake when starting" message. There will be no oil pressure warning when the engine is not running. It's not like the old fashioned simple system of a pressure switch wired directly to a warning light. The Discovery is far too clever for that.

One could argue that it might be nice to see the low oil pressure light on when the engine is off as a check that the sensing system is working.

side question: is there any way to get the oil pressure from the engine via the IID tool?

The oil pressure switch, located in the 'vee' at the front of the LH cylinder head, connects a ground input to the instrument cluster when oil pressure is present. The switch operates at a pressure of 0.15 to 0.41 Bar (2.2 to 5.9 Psi).

Not really. It does work that way in the D3 but for the D4 the signal is only treated as an input for the fault mask in the IPC.

The upshot is that on the D3 the signal is live, so can flicker when the oil pressure is erratic, whilst on the D4 the computer can decide if and when the warning is displayed. As there is a time criteria to be satisfied before display a D4 warning it can never flicker and it is possible to have a damaging reduction in oil pressure with zero warning to the driver due to the set value of the pressure switch combined with the latching rate.

Madness I know, but that is way it is set to work on the D4 - it can lunch its engine due to low pressure with the driver blissfully unaware. Despite the intervention on LRCS when I raised this design flaw a few years ago they could not persuade any comment from the technical department. The flaw is easily fixed but has remained across the models and years affected.

more correct description for D4 2013 MY and later
The sensor is connected directly to the instrument cluster, not connected to the ECM but is supplied with a reference voltage from the instrument cluster. The Item sensor ground is through the sensor body and the engine. When the oil pressure are in the range of 0.15 to 0.41 Bar, the sensor internal switch contacts close, completing a circuit from the instrument cluster. This circuit is sensed by the instrument cluster which displays and appropriate warning message and warning lamp to alert the driver.

OK?

Sounds great but no, it does not work that way - we wish it did.

The test confirms that the signal from the oil sensor processed by the instrument cluster, before the alarm lamp turns on. It’s very important not disturb the driver before the engine failure, and then all the lights at once like a Christmas tree. Surprise Laughing Laughing Laughing

I run the test on my MY16

Yep, I agree. Laughing

It would be good to know if the MY16 is different as I have not checked that model year.

What a stupid design!

Is there any way to fit an oil pressure sensor to the engine to display in the car, similar to the Madman?
