Got the dreaded yellow light warnign light, message and no reversing lights AGAIN.
Booked in for J.E.B. to have another go at it. Third time since October, this time only about 4 weeks since last visit, I'm going to be very polite, but I'm "not amused".
My brain says its not just a case of clearing the fault and reprogramming/recalibrating the transfer box module (which were both done on the each of the previous visits) but DOING something about the root cause - any tips on what I should hint at apart from the obvious of changing the module and making sure the connections haven't had too much to drink? Had a forward creep again yesterday, halted by re-applying the switch.
Today, when I set the brake at some traffic lights, and released the foot brake (still in Drive) the chassis lurched/twisted - obviously only one wheel brake engaged. The car unlurched (that can't be a word) when I drove off.
Time to scan the posts looking for the info on cleaning/re-setting the shoes I guess... Give a man a fire and he's warm for the day. But set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.

EPB went all wobbly within 200 metres of starting the first lane on the Salisbury recce - i.e. no mud, was OK all through the Salisbury weekend but started squealing in Fulham on Tuesday
Couldn't be @rsed to take it in, and, in the interests of science decided to have a look myself.....
The procedure for setting up the EPB calls for a minimum and maximum torque range to be set by rotating the driveshaft nut against the brake shoe friction, I decided to measure the existing effort required to see how far out of range things were
Maximum torque is 66 pounds ft.
Minimum torque is 30 pounds ft.
Left side was >10 pounds ft.
Right side was 18 pounds ft.
Although there is a clear procedure for adjusting and bedding in the park brake shoes, I decided to strip both sides to see just how much ingress of muck there was. The right side wasn't too bad but there was evidence of rubbing on the backplate an evidence of copperslip being applied in the past to counteract the friction caused by the rubbing, the left side was a lot worse although this can be attributed to a distorted back plate as a consequence of having the wheel bearing replaced in Spain - it was noticed at the time but TBH I didn't think it was worth worrying about! - it's now been 'adjusted'
Both adjusters had been threadlocked so the drift cannot be attributed to vibration or TC / HDC activity, also, both sets of shoes were scored to some extent but were significantly above the minimum friction surface thickness. No wear to the drum surface was evident
Once rebuilt and taken out of 'mounting' mode ( the EPB needs to be fully wound off to allow enough slack on the cables to remove the shoes and carry out the adjustment procedure accurately) I carried out the bedding procedure, which is recommended after 50 miles of mud wading to fully clean and 'set' the shoes
Result - Success!
Although it was worth cleaning out the brake drums, none of the muck inside could have caused the EPB failure and given the control system for the EPB it's unlikely that cable stretch could be responsible for the increased movement necassary to apply the EPB (and therefore the cable movement reaching the end stop, causing the screech of the EPB motor clutch) so although I will now be running the 'bedding in procedure' after prolonged mud - plugging, I still can't find any reason as to why the EPB shoes are losing their adjustment
Pictures to follow - along with one of the PB cable rubbing on an air pipe, despite being repositioned once by the dealers and twice by myself! Oh, total time taken, 4.5 hours including tea breaks for Freelander 2 Diesel, Discovery 3 / RR Sport TDV6 & RR Sport TDV8, Defender (TD5 & Puma) - available Now!

TFC, How much of that adjustment/bedding in procedure could one of us folks do themselves without a computer telling the car to do various things?
Interesting to hear about your findings; sounds like a locked room murder mystery with no obvious culprit.
If the cable isn't stretching, is there any chance the cable sheath is compressing leading to the same stretch like symptom? Give a man a fire and he's warm for the day. But set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Hats off for the investigation there Iain I think its still fairly evident from your observations that this is never going to be a laymans fix \ clean ...so we would still need to challenge LR & the stealers on their rejection of warranty and subsequent charging on occasions Powered by............................

The bedding in procedure is able to be done without IDS / Autologic intervention but this in itself won't cure EPB issues, i'd recommend that before anyone carries out this procedure that they check the rotational force required is within limits and treat it as a prevention not a cure...note that when checking or adjusting the shoes, the weel hub must always be rotated in the same direction as forward motion would cause for each wheel, i.e. left side, anticlockwise
right side, clockwise
Because there is a lateral force sensor in the EPB, it's unlikely that the cable or outer could be stretched or compressed beyond its elasticity point for Freelander 2 Diesel, Discovery 3 / RR Sport TDV6 & RR Sport TDV8, Defender (TD5 & Puma) - available Now!
