First D3 Help
Hey all.
I've been hanging around here reading all about the D3, and I'm ready to take the plunge.
I know it's gonna be a costly experience buying and maintaining a Land Rover but I reckon I can handle that.
I want a motor I can clean up and use through the week for my work and at the weekends I can take my jetski to the beach or do a bit of greenlaning in.
I have been looking at two discos the first is a 2007 gs with 100 thousand miles at 8 grand and the other is a 2008 hse with 130 thousand at 12 grand, both have seemingly got fsh, I haven't seen them in the flesh yet.
What I really want to know is, are all these gadgets worth the extra money.

My old man was a mechanic, I was always told to get shot of cars when the mileage got too high and don't bother with gadgets they all go wrong.
That's why I'm tempted to go with the lower mileage gs, 4 grands a lot of extra cash for sat nav and a few other toys, from what I've read on here most of the upgrades can be retro fitted without too much hassle.

Or go for an SE. You get most of the gadge but avoid the customary leaking sunroof. Unless you would like sunroof and enjoy soggy carpets. Easy to upgrade the electronic toys and the 19" wheels can be had for the price of a good meal out.
And with a 2007 or 2008 TDV6 make sure the oil pump has been changed or factor in an immediate change, otherwise you'll be playing oil pump roulette.

The belts prop shaft and wishbones have been changed on the gs which is a private sale, the hse is a one owner with full service history coming from a garage, don't really know what fsh entails here, how much does a pump cost, is it an easy home repair?

It's not a standard service item as LR doesn't think it is a problem so FSH doesn't cover it unless you find it in the invoices. No idea re costs & how easy to do.

I don't buy on mileage, only condition, history and type of owner.
Many low mileage vehicles are abused and not looked after.
Most modern diesels especially with different need to be used and generally speaking cars go much higher mileage now days than years gone by where a vehicle near 100,000 was near the end of its life.
The HSE is bound to be dearer from a dealer than private.

I reckon I'll have a bit of wiggle with the dealer and I really like the idea of the HSE, I've just got this long held fear of aging gadgetry and high miles.
I'd also feel a bit guilty buying an unmarked motor then driving it off road, through bushes and bogs.

No 'greenlanes' in Scotland to worry about scratching it on....
Where about are you?
You could maybe get a local second opinion on any car you are considering.

I stay in Campbeltown, I want to take my jetski up and down the beach, might as well do it in style.
I'm looking at 2 different motors, one near Perth the other in Falkirk.

Disco Mikey in Dundee might know either car.
If you don't know, he's Dundee based mobile specialist and goes all over Scotland, though he has recently taken on a work-shop unit in Dundee so isn't (currently) travelling quite as much.
Regarding concerns about mileage, the general opinion on here seems to be that mileage ins't too much of a problem if proper service intervals are observed.
I have 199,000 on the clock, I've done over 50,000 in the last two years. D3/4's seem to thrive on regular use.

I'll maybe drop him a PM to see if he knows anything, probably be a good idea to get in touch with him anyway, after lurking about here for a while it doesn't seem like a bad idea to have an experienced mechanic on hand.

Buy a GS and you spend all your spare time and cash trying to turn it into a HSE which it will never be no matter how much you spend on lt, at the point of sale when new a MY05 had £15000 worth of extras over a GS if only half of them work you're getting a bargain and it's highly likely they will all work and will carry on working. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

15 grand didn't realise it was that much, I honestly want the HSE, the only thing that puts me off is the high mileage, I think I'm learning here it's not what the cars done but the care it's been given thats important.

Bang on with the SE. Best D3 model out there in my opinion.
