Should I keep it?
Long story short, I've ended up with a 170k Disco 3 as part exchange for my Defender. It's had all the major stuff done and drives very well apart from some play in the transmission if you're heavy on the throttle after coasting. Steering and suspension is good and there is no smoke from the engine. There are a lot of dinks on the bodywork and the interior needs some work.
My thoughts are, either keep it as a workhorse and do the odd greenlaning weekend, or tidy it up and sell it. The question is, would taking it off-road at this age/mileage risk killing it? Should I just get rid anyway because of the mileage?

I guess you need to ask yourself "Do I want it"? or do you want something else?

If it's been well looked after and had all the major work done, then 170k is nothing for A TDV6. There are Discos on here that have pushed well past the 500k mark and are still running strong.
Having driven countless defenders at work, for veeeery long distances (think Portsmouth to the Hebrides in a oner) and having had my Disco for nearly 3 years, I can say without a doubt that the Disco is more comfortable, and feels more sure footed, both on and off road.
Obviously the Disco is a lot wider than a Defender, and this does mean more bramble rash and the occasional scary moments when going town narrow, walled country lanes, but as you said it's already got some battle scars, so what's a few more weighed up against some fun off road? what is this life, if full of care?
we have no time to stand and stare.
