Alternator / battery problem
At the moment I have a EA1000 Exide Premium Car Battery 017TE (2 years old) and over the last two days the battery warning light has been on. I've left it so far as the car is going into the garage in a few days time for another issue.
However, today the car was completely dead and there was a slight burning smell when i lifted up the bonnet. Alternator?
I've tried to charge the battery but it's unresponsive (normal and smart chargers). I also tried to jump start it but all i got was a 10 second buzzing noise coming from the glove box area after turning key in ignition.
My options are:
1) buy a new battery just to get the car to the garage.
2) order a tow truck to get the car there.
Whats the best option.
Cheers

Option 3) fit a new alternator and battery where it is. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Ah, didn't think of that. My mechanic skills are, I'm ashamed to say, non-existent but i'll look into getting someone out.

I'm afraid you've fallen foul of one of the classic issues Discovery 3 + 4 owners have to live with.
If you search amongst the threads you will find a failing alternator will often kill a perfectly good battery. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but in ignoring the red battery warning light, you have allowed the alternator to fully fail and thus kill your battery.
DO NOT fit a new battery yet. There will be a dead short within the alternator that will also kill your new battery. Get your vehicle recovered, have the dead alternator replaced, fit a new battery and everything should be good to go.
Sadly, your case isn't an isolated one, but the golden rule is if you suspect a failing alternator or your battery warning light comes on, you could save yourself the price of a replacement battery by disconnecting your old one.Mods:

Hi
Cheers, yes it's been an expensive lesson. I should have googled it as soon as I saw the red light. I expect LR will try and make me buy one of their batteries at £££ so I'll probably buy new one from Tanya and put it in the car ready for them to fit.
The AA bloke has just been out and confirmed (smell test and burnt label!) a knackered alternator. I didn't realise I had Home Start with the AA so least I can get it taken into the garage by them.
thanks for help

Have a think about doing it yourself as the alternator is a really easy job - bolt off, bolt on with a guide available on here. The hardest part is usually the bolt that holds the fan on.
Even with this being an easy job I can assure you that you will feel pretty good after completing the job.

Which one of these would you go for:
BOSCH S5013, CCA 830, 100Ah: £105
or
019 Enduroline Car Battery 100Ah 900CCA: £74
I've never heard on Enduroline so not sure.
