Route Forward

I am at a junction with my Disco 3. (2007, SE, Auto)

I have a company car available and not sure whether to take it. Although I love the Disco, this could be the most sensible option.

It is providing me with trouble free motoring... torn between my head and my heart!

I am also unsure of what value I could get it for it if I sold it.

It has 96k on the clock, MOT until Feb and around 18 months left on a warranty I took out.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers Chaps

A company car would need to go some to beat the Disco. Tax on it will be horrendous as well.

Ask the company to give you a car allowance and a fuelcard - when I had a fuelcard, I paid tax on the fuel used, not a calculated value based on list price. I liked paying 40% of the pump price....

How likely is it that your company car will be able to do (or you be allowed to do) the things you've done in the Disco?

I have just got shot of my company car Audi A3 2.0TDi, and went back to car allowance and got myself a BMW 135i on PCP. The BMW costs me the same as what the Audi was in monthly payments once tax return is included per year.

Unless you are doing very high levels of mileage, I wouldn't go the company car route again personally.

If a car allowance is an option - take it

I opted out of our car scheme in 1999 and would never opt back in, taxation position now is more favourable, you can claim the difference in miles expensed and what HMRC allow as an increase in your allowance and you can choose what you want

Also note the BIK rules look likely to change - so it may become even more beneficial to take the allowance in the near future

I'm on the reverse side of this. I handed my company car back to swap it for an allowance as I needed a bigger car for the family and purchased a D3. I guess it depends what you need it for? I didn't do a huge amount of work miles so it made sense for my space requirements.

I do miss having no running costs or big surprise bills to pay. The allowance and tax difference pays for the running costs and I don't have to drive a Ford focus anymore! ha ha.

I'm unfortunately an accountant. The next 4 years company car tax gets worse, the % keeps moving blame George! To the point where its not viable.

Choose the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV & pay 7% Benefit in Kind tax compared to the 25% or more that most others will pay.

I'm retired so that's not such an incentive for me, but I am beginning to think that I'll run the Disco 3 for a few more years & then go for a hybrid petrol/electric vehicle, possibly Disco 5 if there is one, or maybe Jaguar F-Pace.

Failing that there's always a pure electric car like those built by Elon Musk.

Stick with it!!! It seems to make sense, you have a warranty in place, not major miles on it, it's running well So lucky you why change what you appear to be happy in and pay more tax. If it goes wrong set off against the notional tax bill you definitely would have to pay.

7% now but it will be 16% by 2019 they don't tell you that on the advert. And that is already enacted!

Had both and prefer to choose and own my own. Works out financially better but also I found that having a company car prevented me modifying and using it for normal active family things without worrying about damage. The car was scrutinised on return and i was charged for what i would have considered wear and tear which Censored me off

I and most of my colleagues have given up in company cars. Unless you are happy to drive something that's a horrible compromise, it makes little sense. I am particularly averse to driving Censored cars and prefer to make my own choice.

Glad that the Achilles' heal of the Phev's taxation has already been raised.

Slightly off topic but related. Anyone know the implications of taking say a Tesla as a company car and your employer also contributing to your household electric bill by letting you claim back the electric used as an expense? is HMRC geared up to handle that?
