Thanks LandPhil, much appreciate your thoughts. To be honest I had two playlists ready to go for this trip: the Wagner and another containing the likes of the Rolling Stones, Guns and Roses and yes, even some Abba. Endded up listening to the first playlist but there's always the return journey.
As for researching a vehicle's economy: good point . And I did my research. It started with the D2 when that first appeared, then the D3, and finally the D4 and all its various incarnations up until the most recent tweaks. The discovery isn't exactly the most frugal of vehicles and I certainly didn't purchase it thinking it would be. I bought it for its other simply fantastic abilities. My point, which clearly I made badly, is that for this type of journey fuel economy for me was an important factor when deciding which car I'd choose.

Had one of the last old shape RRS and now have one of the last D4 HSE, D4 wins for me but the sport handled/went a bit better.
As for the fuel thing, you're getting a big car with FWD, a powerful engine and off road capabilities that it's competitors can only dream of, not to mention incredible towing abilities, you just gotta pay the tally man for all that.
The Audi "power bull 5000" or whatever it's called could have blazed you there at 217 miles an hour, but I suspect that it struggle to do it whilst dragging a large speed boat behind it, whereas your humble Disco can..... The devil will find work for idle hands to do
I stole and I lied, and why? because you asked me to

The year before last the guy on the next pitch to in France us was towing a V10 Audi RS6. His 'van was only a single axle, so not particularly large or heavy - He was getting 7MPG
So there may be other nice stuff around, so in any single category you can find something better than a D4, but when you stick them all together there's not a lot of choice.

Have to say my MY08 D3 HSE has been the perfect car for our trips from Dublin to Tuscany.
For the last 3 years it has transported the four of us in comfort in the cabin and all their luggage and about 100+ bottles of wine in the boot safely stored under the load cover. 3,500 miles there and back at 28.8 MPG.
Coming back this year we did Castellina to Calais, just a touch over 900 miles) in one go and I'm not sure of another car that I'd attempt that in Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE

The best "on the road" 4x4 I have ever owned is a Lexus 400H. Eats the miles effortlessly with economy excellent in a car of that size. It has a heart attack if you point it at wet grass and the boot is too small but on the road, nothing LR have ever made will touch it.
But it's biggest problem is the badge. Whatever it is it's not a Land Rover. It never will be.
It's almost "too good" and "too reliable"
Land Rovers are a bit like Red heads. Read head's don't have a soul so you should never date one but if you do you'll be hooked for life and won't be able to go back!
Land rovers - they are the sum of their parts for sure!
