Dunno mate, but in general 'cheap' car components are generally second grade - not saying these are, but it's standard industry practice to sell off second grade stuff (not rejects) rather than scrap 'em

Maybe I'll give them ago in my old defender V8. It doesnt stop too well at the moment  , what with rear drums, so it should be a good test

I was quoted over £400 to do replace my brake pads by my local dealer, or £205 by the one near the ancestral home. I then found this post and ordered all the bits from Nick in Yeovil for £105, delivered.
I'm changing them myself then 
(and sending a portion of the savings to Martin for the disco3.co.uk upkeep, of course!)

| Front and Rear Pads replaced |
|
Hi just replaced front and rear pads on my newly acquired Discovery III. Warning light was on after 27000 miles. Brought full LR kit from great bloke on UK eBay for £51 + P&P. Pads were a doddle, front sensor very fiddly and had to reach under yards of plastic wheel arch to remove old clip and attach new one. Rear sensor much easier. Total time taken around 2hrs total cost around £75. Tempted to buy another kit ready for the next time, still selling on eBay for around £60 for fron rear and sensors.

Just one little question. The piston compression tool -where do you get one & is it really necessary to have one to retract the pistons?

Yes we used a compression tool (like an elongated mole grip) to squeeze the brake cylinders in and used a syringe to remove excess brake fluid from master cylinder. I guess you could do it with fingers if strong hands or some sort of large plumbing pliers/grips.
Note syring had small rubber pipe lashed onto it to get into the brake fluid reservoir.

Re: a couple of replies back on EBC pads and brakes.
As per my other post these are top quality brake components and I have them fitted to my Lotus Elan SE Turbo and they are superb over the original fit Lotus/GM/Astra rubbish.
Long lasting and a good price, when discounted. The disks for the rear of the Elan are nearly £200 each without discount !

| Brake wear warning light reset |

Guys i have read through all post re the subject of changing brake pads, but is it definitely a dealer reset to get the warning light to go off after changing the front pads? The warning light came on at 26k miles, which sounds about in line with some other stories on here, I called the tyre depot where the changed the pads and they say that they DIDNT replace the warning light wires from the pads themselves.My first D3,HAD A P38 before, I usually do these myself but really didnt have time this time around otherwise i would have been a bit wiser to the ins and outs !!

No reset. Replacing the sensor turns off the light.

When I bought some pads for my D3 the dealer insisted that I replace the wear indicator wiring loom also.
It's a real pain to fit this the connector as it 'lives' behind the wheel arch inner skin 
You only need to replace the sensor if it had made contact with the rotor (your brakes light comes on in this case). If the light hasn't come on, the sensor is fine and can be reused.

So, if I'm understanding correctly, it's better to go with the LandRover brake pad kits, than to buy aftermarket pads from say Schucks or Napa? I've found the rear brake pad kit for $62 plus shipping..
