Front Brake Pads - changing

Just done the front pads - on a scale of 1 - 10 they are a 1, very easy.

Tools required;

Good jack and stands, wheel brace, 13mm spanner, 15mm spanner, Pliers, brake cleaner, brake grease, piston retraction tool.

1. Securely jack the car onto axle stands and remove front wheels
2. On the left hand side, use pliers to pull the pad wear sensor off the pad
3. Remove the 13 mm bolts that hold the caliper to the caliper frame (use the 15mm spanner to hold the sliding joints whilst you undo the caliper bolts)
4. Discard the caliper bolts (new ones are in the kit)
5. Lift off the caliper and support, take care not to strain the brake pipe and wires.
6. Remove and discard the old pads.
7. Remove and discard the pad support springs (new ones in kit)
8. Use piston compression tool to fully retract pistons into caliper - take care and push the pistons slowly and squarely.
9. Clean the caliper with brake cleaner.
10 Fit the new support springs to the caliper frame
11 Smear a little brake grease onto the back of each pad, and a little onto the sliding surface that fits into the support spring
12 Fit the pads into the support springs
13 Replace the caliper onto the frame and use the new bolts to secure.
14 Refit road wheel

Make sure you put the wear sensor onto the left hand side inner pad. The wear sensor has a small brass contact spring that fits around it. This was stuck into my old brake pad, and could easily get lost so make sure you retrieve it.

Before you drive the car, pump the pedal to seat the pads properly. The brakes may be spongy for a few miles.

Took me 45 minutes for both sides.

Excellent!

2 questions: - how much is the brake kit? How much is the standard cost for LR to do this job themselves?

[ie how much will I be saving!]

The kit cost me £40, I got a small discount because I got them through an independant, the dealer cost is £50 or so he tells me.

My local dealer is nearly £100 per hour labour. So I would suspect that they would charge £140 - £150 for the job. I did not ask them to quote, as I have always done my own repairs and servicing where possible. I send it in for its scheduled oil change to get the stamp in the book.

I think the dealers are taking the mickey with some of thier prices, especially when you consider that most of us know more about the car than they do.

Gareth,

Just one more question, can you let me know what was the mileage you got out from the front brake pads?

Regards, AN

25000 miles, they were down to 4 mm. Mine is an auto, and I do tow a lot.

Gareth

Did you have to replace the wear indicator wiring?

When I bought some pads for my D3 the dealer insisted that I replace the wear indicator wiring loom also.

It's a real pain to fit this the connector as it 'lives' behind the wheel arch inner skin Sad

36K still on same set and dealer says they are OK... manual though so may make a difference. Most of my mileage is motorway too.

Chris, No I did'nt but then again the dealer did not tell me I needed to!

They are a fiddle, because I did think about changing them when I found out they should have been changed.

I keep an eye on my pads weekly, so I decided not to. Mine get replaced well before the wear indicator would be required.

There was nothing wong with the old looms anyway, so long as the small copper clip stays on the end.

Next time, I will change it.

Best to undo inner skin clips and follow wire up to the connector...now using your 3rd hand...I think you get the picture....try and release the old connector (all by feel) and attach the new one.. Shocked

I am going to do mine, front and back, tomorrow. LR wanted $850 to do them. Atlantic British has the parts for $249, but I am getting them from Land Rover for $304.98 because they are in stock.
