2008 tdv6 cranks but wont fire.

Hi, having problems with a tdv6 not starting. It will spin over and start the first time after sitting for a while but it wont stay running. After this all it does is spin over. Had it plugged in and you could see the fuel pressure building then dropping off as soon as it started.
The is plenty of fuel at the schrader bleed valve but next to nothing coming through the HPFP. Is this pump at fault?

The car was running fine then suddenly stopped. The fuel pump drive belt is intact as we checked this first.

Any input on this would be greatfully received

Regards
Mark

It sounds like the fuel pump is shutting off, could be the relay.

Mark when you say you had your car "plugged in" - do you mean you had a fuel pressure gauge in the fuel line or did you use a scantool ? Look up "Robbies guide to low pressure fuel system", which is on this website , it is an excellent resource. If you can isolate the cause not to be related to low pressure fuel pump (mounted in fuel tank) or blocked fuel filter , then most likely cause of your fault is the HPFP. My D3 recently went into limp mode randomly , but my IID scantool diagnosed code P2290 (low fuel pressure to injectors). Put in a new HPFP and problem solved. Without scantool diagnosis and a careful elimination of other possible causes this can be a daunting problem to solve.

Yes the pump in the tank, as stated above i would follow Robbies guide even if you dont have a pressure gauge you could use an ammeter to see if the pumps running.
When was the last time your fuel filter was changed? A blocked fuel filter can give simular symtoms, good pressure to start with which rapidly dies off as the filter cant keep up

Thanks, will bang a new filter on and check the realy out on the pump. I was more curious as to the hpfp failing instantly rather than a bit of a degradation in performance etc.

That has been tried, ive got a fuel pressure test kit coming monday so can rule out the tank pump and go from there. Seems to be plenty coming out of the schrader valve but a gauge will clear that up!

It could ba a faulty crank sensor not sending a signal to the ecu and it then shuts down the fuel pump
