Extending breather pipes
hi
was wondering do u extend ur breather pipes please
from ur diffs, automatic gearbox etc
or isn't it necessary

There are already high up in the engine bay.
Do you mean Extend further ?

knew the D3 design was smart in already raising them ,
no , didn't wish to extend them any further if there already in the engine bay
assume there the same level as the air filter

Front diff breather is up behind the radiator and just below the height of the slam panel. The gearbox and transfer box breathers come up behind the engine and in front of the firewall. If you reach behind the engine V you can feel the top of the loops. The rear diff breather terminates up level with the fuel filler flap. The starter motor should have a breather too and this should run up behind the engine to terminate next to the gearbox breather.
Correctly fitted, the breathers should be high enough so that the engine air intake in the wing is your main concern. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

good to know they are already raised, plus their location , in order i know what they are when i come across them
do any of the breather pipes req filters
daft question if i may , how does a starter motor get a breather pipe
does a special casing surround it with a breather pipe off it , just never sent that

I've not seen a raised breather on the starter. It does have 2 vents though.
The front diff has a filter thing. And there is a mod to change it on the early cars.

The starter is sealed and has two pipes. These are brought together and a single pipe run up behind the engine. A clip is added to the bell housing to help support it. This appears to be a mod from LR - presumably one of the things that allowed for the wading depth increase. I killed two starters on my TDV8 before I found out about the starter snorkel.
Judging by the way the LR dealership tucked the snorkel down below the gearbox rather than routing it correctly, it seems many don't know about it.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

thks for that , have got a roll left over when i done the breathers on my freelander and some pushfit couplings elbows and some small plastic securing clips
got one that goes from two pipes into one
will have a look , might even be the right size, lol
going to also check that breather pipe filter

would it hurt if i put the stater motor breather and diff breather together
then raise them , running them under the cover where the brake reservoir is and then put the filter on top
or is that not a wise thing to do, or run then up separately terminating them under that cover
found it , this is a kit i had left over from the freelander , pipe and fittings are 6mm

Considering the diff and starter are on different sides of the car, I wouldn't bother trying to join them.
Also don't really want any oily fumes in the starter.

The two silver pipes under the coolant hoses are the autobox and transfer box breather pipes.
Bolt to the back of the head, not normally visible.

there nice and high as previously mentioned
it was only an afterthought considering i had the spare pipe and fittings , will do the starter motor on its own
ordered the diff filter so at least it will be one little job done
