That's why you have to go to night school to get your Ham radio licence and learn about antenna radiation and the propagation of radio waves D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

Hi yes the 4x4 network is VHF and we have a group licence as the radios are hard coded the specific frequencies for the local repeaters and national channels.
So no licence to worry about.
Just be aware they are frequencies that anyone with a scanner can listen to so not a secure link.

I think that you will find even at PMR freq's that you are limited in output power without the correct licence.
As for fitting, it depends on the size of your radio, the set up of your dash and access to power. I have a small unit that sits just above the side vent. Dave

I agree. Repeaters or talk-through units are key. On RAYNET gigs, even running 30, 40 or even 50 watts on VHF it would just bounce it around the hillsides. Yet with strategically placed talk though units (permits required!) we can cover hundreds of square miles with very minimal shadow areas. Additionally, many operators will also only then need a few watts to open the TTU so you don't need to cart big batteries up all the hilltops. D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

in kent ( 4x4 response ) we have access to kent police's airwave radios ( tetra ) for search and rescue and traffic assist, we also have two mobile VHF repeaters and a bunch of channels for inter group & events work and we've also just got our own truncated digital network with three fixed repeater sites that give us coverage from london down to dover and across the whole county... www.southeast4x4response.org.uk Responder of 9 years service SE140
