KN64 VHT Stolen Central Birmingham

Hi All

My beloved D4 KN64 VHT was stolen yesterday from Albert Street Carpark, Central Birmingham.

It looks like it may have been a relay theft as there wasn't any broken glass in the vicinity and the door was locked using the keyless (press button on handle) method.

I have requested footage from the management company to see if there is anything worth reviewing.

Attached are the details in the (admittedly slim) chance you come across it.

Thanks,

Matt

Out of interest how close were the keys? You say relay theft but this still works over a relatively short distance.. I.e. car parked on drive, keys on hall sideboard, relay device placed against front door window etc....

Alternatively it could be done at the gym or the restaurant where you have left keys close enough that they can rebroadcast from them...

I would probably more suspect an additional key has been cloned at a car wash, airport long term car park, valet parking etc....

Sorry to hear this. One of the few occasions I'm glad I didn't buy a HSE. No keyless entry = no relay theft.

Thanks guys, it was a lovely car - and in absolutely mint condition after having the dealer spend a lot of time (6 weeks) sorting it before purchase, to the extent of having new carpets throughout, replacement door-cards and every single minor scratch dealt with.

Having a look around the LR Approved site, can't find anything that comes close for the money I paid for this which is even more annoying.

According to a friend in the police, after it was parked up, my wife may have been followed by one member of the team as she exited the open air car park whilst the other one unlocked and started it. Once started, as you know, it doesn't stop if the key is missing.

I hadn't had the car long (bought it in Oct 2017) and it has never been to a carwash, valet parked or an airport whilst in my possession. We bought it mainly for camping / shopping / kids stuff and so I doubt we did 1000 miles since purchasing it.

I was considering getting the BAS remote heat / tracker combo and wish I had now - I would have at least had an idea of where it was going - if we replace with another, I will definitely do so.

Now I just have the pain of getting the insurance sorted as it is unlikely to be found.

Absolutely gutted for you!... the thieves will presume that a car like that will have a Tracker fitted and after programming another key for it will probably lay it up for a couple of days in order that it doesn’t lead the police to their lair...

Therefore it will be worth doing a street search for it in places where a Discovery won’t look out of place.. think nice estates or even public car parks and multi storeys so don’t lose hope in finding it.

Rat runner consider getting a Ghost immobiliser which will allow you to sleep at night!

Overnight I now use a key defender signal blocker, as recommended by someone else on here. You can fit two keys in it and stand right beside the car and you can't open the doors. May be worth getting a smaller one to take with you.

Really sorry to hear about the theft, I know what it is like trying to find a good used Disco.

I travel through Sutton and Birmingham regularly , so will keep a lookout for it.

Who knows why they have stolen it, possibly breaking, shipping abroad but it may reappear on Gumtree, Ebay , Autotrader Instagram etc.

Sorry to hear the news Sad

About time manufacturers sorted this issue out of key-less thefts. It surely wouldn't be hard to initiate a controlled shut-down if the car is driven off and the smart key removed from the vicinity, a countdown on the dash followed by reduced throttle input and finally a cut once the speed was safely low. I had this technology on a 'Black Jack' anti-hijack device on a Cosworth in the 90's!

I wouldn't like to point any fingers, but at least 3 of the relay thefts I've seen now are in the Birmingham/ Solihull area, would it be so far fetched to assume that it may be an employee/ ex employee of JLR with knowledge?

Or someone has sold the knowledge to someone?

These thief's are not simpletons (well the ones who run it) I'd guess the people actually taking the risk are just minions..

I would imagine you would have to have a good understanding of the systems to clone keys/ relay a D4.

I can't believe how easy the kit to actually do this theft is to find on the internet.

This victims video on youtube is of the theft of a Disco 4 using the keyless method. In the comments is an advert!! for someone who is selling the kit to do it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-Jabg9yiDk

When the technology is sufficiently compromised to make it ineffective, something needs to be done.
