Hi there,
I'm hoping some body out there can help me with a problem thats occurred today, basically I've an amber "parking brake fault" light showing on the dash and the gear indication has disappeared for first and reverse, all other gears show but its slow at displaying the numbers. The car is an SE on a 55 plate. Does anybody know if this is an easy fix or a known problem? I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow. Many thanks.

Does the gear indicator area have a big angry F??? I had similar to you but it cleared on a restart after leaving the car for a while.

known issue - its unlikely you have a park brake fault. The issue is, the system loses what gear it thinks you are in, and throws a fault (why in god knows it puts up the park brake fault - but thats what it does). Simple recalibration job.

Think it's a manual thing, but not 100% sure.
I was getting the gear indicator number come up, but it would only appear 3 or 4 seconds after selecting the gear, rather than instantly. It also causes the amber parkbrake warning to show (because the parkbrake isn't sure if you are in gear or not).
You find a longish bit of road, select low gear, then reverse up until the 'R' shows up. Then select 1st and drive until '1' comes up, 2nd until '2' comes up, all the way up to 6th and '6' appears.. Then lock the car up and wait for the red parkbrake light to go out. Then it'll work fine again!
It might work in high range, but you need a really long bit of clear road for that

Yes it has happened to me five times and is not a common problem as I've asked a good few times on the forum.
I forget what my dealer said exactly whatt the problem was but will be seeing them on Monday for a service.Something to do with a module or something or other. It doesn't have any other effects as far as I could see but it is annoying.Does yours actually show the gear selected when you've been cruising in that gear for a while ?
I managed to see it happening the last time , high revs climbing a steep hill.Let me know how you get on and make sure you ask your dealer what the TSB number is that applies to the fault.Ive made a note to ask mine.
nothing shows on the display, only the message on the screen telling me there's a fault

Sorry another symptom was a loss of reverse lights ( flash for a millisecond whilst engaging reverse) , same with you ?

tried Stu's remedy but couldn't find a road long enough for reversing took it to the dealer and it was fixed in 3 hours under warranty. They had done a diagnostic check, replaced a sensor, remapped and a software upgrade but couldn't (or is that didn't want to) give me a TSB number. Many thanks to all for infomation.
