It's OK but to call the discovery 4 the fourth generation seems excessive .....and more for a specialized journalist, I think the D3 and D4 are the third generation without a doubt

Curious anecdote of the first launch in Germany, very significant for the current times lost in translation!

A well written article. D1's appeal IMV was that it was just so different to all other 4x4s that are intended to go off road. The light in the cabin was exceptional especially with the alpine lights.
I am glad he marked the jump from D2 to D3 as a major one as they are such different vehicles. No mention of the reliability or lack of in the early models .
I have fond memories of test driving 4x4s in Oman. We took a Land Cruiser up a very rough access track towards a radio mast on top of a mountain ridge. We couldn't get the Landcruiser beyond half way and sweated heavily with fear reversing part of the way down.
The D2 , under powered, loose steering, creaked and groaned , stuttered and slowly made its way to the top. But its reliability was a different story unfortunately.

Well its what the whole world calls them, D3 and D4, bit like the P38 wasnt actually the P38 at all but the name stuck.

I don't see the level of difference between D3 and D4 is any greater than the difference between the D1 200tdi and 300tdi variants.
In both cases there are a large number of relatively small changes (engine, gearbox, suspension, trim etc.) , which add up to being a very different experience overall.
So the D4 is either 3rd or 5th generation, but not the 4th, IMHO

Indeed, it’s so good that replacing the benign but tough-looking demeanour of the first four Discovery models with a fifth iteration that’s more sleekly Range Rover-like has caused a bit of controversy. I get the feeling there are enthusiasts of the first four that will need to be persuaded.

The change of number, from D3 to D4, was purely a marketing trick. If they hadn't done it, the D3 would have been in production for over 12 years. The D1 was only in production for 11 years. Manufacturers really do like to only have a production span of around 5-6 years maximum these days!
The shortest production run of any Discovery was the revised D2 with the pocket headlamps, it only ran from 2002 to 2004....2016 Discovery 4 Commercial
2019 Discovery 5 HSE
