Constant clunking when turning in either direction
Hi, I hope someone can help. I have an 06 D3 done 144K miles, which I bought recently. All was well until it started making noises when turning. Suspected CV joints but local indie said they were OK. When turning it feels as if wheels are fighting to turn or stiff.
I am baffled.
Has anyone out there come across this? Do I need to sell my children to get it put right?
Thanks in advance .

Have you had the tyres changed or wheel alignment done recently? If so the transfer box clutches might need recalibrating - it's a 2 min job if you have an IID tool - if using somebody else's it requires the pro license I think. If the clunking is happening whilst you are turning the steering wheel then look at the joint in the steering column - I think it's the bottom one, a common problem well documented on this forum

Thanks for the reply. It has recently had the wheel alignment done following track rod ends. I looked through many threads in the forum but could not find one describing a similar sound. It is not a single clunk but continuous which is why I didn't' think it was steering column.
I live near Presteigne, is there anyone around that way who could recalibrate the transfer boxes please as all my previous Landys have been Series, D1's and D2's so I haven't had to engage with too much technology.

Many thanks for suggestion The steering itself turns smoothly, it's the rotation of the wheels that causes the clunks and these noises are speed dependant.
Hopefully a recalibration may sort it out.
Any other suggestions gratefully received.

As has been mentioned already, could need transfer box calibrating. If you are on a loose surface and the wheels are fighting each other and scrabbling whilst turning then it does need calibrating. The noise maybe the DSC cutting in?
Have you had the transfer box oil changed recently? Was the correct oil used? It's called funnily enough 'special transfer box fluid'.
Some people have needed to calibrate the box after an oil change because of this problem. Luckily not been a problem on my pair of D3's.

Get an IID BT. I've just bought one and its worth its weight in gold. You'll soon recoup the cost.
Buy it from one of the UK resellers. I made the mistake of buying it direct and it cost me an extra £60 in taxes!New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
Sold Volvo XC90 R-Design (known as Basil)

If i remember correctly, there is a method of re-calibrating the transfer box without needing an IID tool, but usefully, i cannot remember how hopefully one of the more learned will be along soon to help.
Andi.
Edit. I found the info but its not letting me cut and paste, search for transfer box calibration, the info is in one of the first posts
