Help - constant flat battery

Please help so came to start my car and yesterday and it was totally flat wouldn't tick over! Jumped it with jump leads and took it for a spin gave it 40 mins at 70 mph up down A1 and come to start it today flat again no faults on the dash i.e. Battery or anything to say alternators gone? Or anything else and don't have an iid tool to check for faults anyone guess to what it is or experienced this before??

I'm going to check tommorow if the belts are ok and not snapped or pulleys ect but other than that I'm suspecting a Censored battery or alternator

Thoughts Bow down

Have you got access to a multimeter or a friend with one to check the battery voltage when standing and when engine is running?

If the battery was dead flat and you jumped it and drove without then putting it on charge there is a good chance it will be flat again. An alternator needs a live feed to get it to work, hence if the battery is dead flat and you jump it there is a possibility there would not be enough power to excite the alternator and get the thing to supply a charge to the battery. Try giving the battery a charge with a proper charger first

Yep gunna get a multimeter tommorow test the battery then test the battery with it running after jumping and see if the alternator is kicking in! I don't have however access to a battery charger till I get home

So will have to wait it's 7 years old thinking the battery should still be good but then again I don't know how long they last for

The original battery in my previous 2010 was shot at 6 years old so that may be your issue.

Your multimeter readings with the engine running are key to this. Wink
You do know that a failing or failed alternator can cause a dead short and kill the battery?
If your readings are low with the engine running, always suspect the alternator and do not replace the battery unless you are totally happy with it's output or risk killing the replacement too. Big Cry

Not running you'll probably have less than 11v because your battery will be flat.
A healthy alternator will push out around 15v from initial start up dropping to around 14.2v after a short while but this can vary depending on load and temperature. Anywhere in that range should be ok but keep testing it whilst it's running to see if there's any variation. Thumbs Up

Hopefully it's just the battery.

Cheers guys hope it's just the battery as I'm guessing it's big money for an alternator plus labour

Soldier,

I don't know about your alternator, but on my Defender when was 6 years old the battery (original at the time) was dead in a night.....

Change the battery with a new AGM one (fully charged before installation). After that check the out put of the alternator, may be is still good.....

On D4 the alternator isn't an issue as per D3

Come to start it today and it's not even slaving so think the battery is totally goosed now so I'm hoping it is that and it's a simple fix but have to wait and see

Dgardel thanks for you advice I'm getting a price for a battery and if I can get it started will check see if the alternator is working fine or not we shall see

Hoping it's nothing else electrical wise Thumbs Up
