Avoid Autoglass

Had to get my windscreen replaced so rang insurer and was passed onto Autoglass to arrange a date for them to fit it.

Told Autoglass that they replaced my screen about 2 years ago and they came out with the wrong screen as I had stipulated that the screen must be Pilkington and NOT some chinese copy. Was told that as I wanted Pilkington glass I would have to wait a few days as it would be a special order. Autoglass range back telling me it would be Good Friday before they could fit it as it the Pilkington screen I want was on order. All good as far as I could see and I was willing to wait the extra few days as I knew I was getting Pilkington glass.

Friday comes and Autoglass ring to tell me they will be with me in an hour or so, I explain that unless it's a Pilkington screen, not to bother coming over as I will only accept a Pilkington or genuine Land Rover screen, their engineer assured me that it was a genuine Pilkington screen.

You know where this is going.

Auto glass arrive to fit the screen and I say to the engineer, do you mind if I check the new screen before you take out the broken one. Well guess what!!!!!!!! It's some cheap chinese copy, so I sent him packing.

I ring Autoglass and tell them their engineer has been sent packing and ask them when I can expect the Pilkington glass to be fitted as per my initial request. Told that as it's special glass they will have to get my insurance company to amortize the fitting of special glass. I pointed out that its not special glass, its waht Land Rover fitted when the car was new and I had all this trouble 2 years ago when they replaced my screen and it took 3 or 4 weeks for them to get the correct glass and fit it for me.

Long Story short after several phone calls to both Autoglass and my insurance company, it was agreed that they would be fitting Pilkington glass today.

Autoglass arrive with Pilkington screen this morning, happy days I think, well guess what?

New Pilkington screen fitted BUT.

Drivers side inside A Pillar trim, has 2 stinking big black marks were they pulled the heated screen cables through the mastic.

They cut the cable to my rear Blackvue camera in 2 places.

Passenger side A pilar outside trim is fitted with the rubber seal folded back on itself.

I think it is more down to the insurance company than Autoglass, most will only use Pilkington or genuine if it is 2 years old or less, I struggled to get genuine in a 26 month old car.

As for the fitting, it is the fitter rather than the company, you can always get a rogue, AG were very good for mine. Although yes, it really is a pain.

To be fair, Autoglass did a great job on mine and their service was firs rate.

Hope you get it resolved quickly.

Oh dear, oh dear! This really is rubbish, but the comment about the insurance company being difficult must be true, the difference in cost between OEM and cheap copy must be immense.

Axa agreed to Pilkington glass, it was Autoglass that told me it would be Pilkington as per my request but they tried to pull a fast one.

I had EXACTLY this with Autoglass. Took 3 attempts to get the screen in (as pilkington) despite exactly the same phone conversations you had and then they had to come back to fix the leak that appeared since they fitted!

TBF the technicians seemed excellent and fitted what they'd been given. Fortunately no damage to mine on top of the screen though. Good luck getting them back to fix it!

Had to struggle to get them to fit Pilkington to my rear screen and told them it had an aerial fitted into it

Engineer looked a the car and told me it didnt have an aerial fitted and went to the depot to get the correct screen and bring it back

Then when he took out the old one I showed him the connectors and how the new screen he had bought didn't have the same aerial fitted and no-where to connect so he fitted it and said they would have to replace it again, didnt give him any payment for the excess

Their customer service team contacted me for payment and I explained i was still awaiting the new screen with correct aerial this was around 8 months ago, and im still waiting to hear back....

In my experience, Autoglass will quite happily lie to your face about what they are fitting. They really don't give a Censored because they've got most of the insurance companies stitched up and 90% of owners don't notice crap glass anyway... well until you need it !!!

I believe there is a law giving you a choice not to accept cheap rip-off insurance work using sub-standard parts... but they get around this by saying the glass cover is a complimentary add-on to your normal insurance. i.e.. you haven't paid for it so you don't get a choice.

It's a rubbish scam that needs to be stamped on. I always ask what my premiums will be without glass cover because I don't want their Censored .

It's a lottery who you get to do it, I had a car years ago that had rain sensing wind screen wipers and come time for the new screen top fitter man decided to tear the control unit off the car and chuck it in the gap between the roof and the headlining, see that way I would never notice.....It all ended up in a reasonable sized ding dong and a three grand bill for top fitter man's boss.
And now you mention it the screen had a distortion in it, guess it must have been a cheapo job.

My windscreen job...

My screen cracked at just about 8 yrs in. HSE heated one.
My insurance company use National Windscreens.
The depot stated I wouldn't get an OEM one....before they'd even phoned the insurance company (Zurich)
My call to the insurance company said no restriction.....
All I was liable for was an excess...as per my policy.
The policy has no mention of any parts type restriction....maybe others should look for this & use the factor.

So -
NW said no stock it had to be non-OEM...no stock anywhere
I found a pilkington screen at the local dealers - 2 miles away

Then they stated they could only fit what they got through thier systems...
This was stated as being 5 - 7 days.

I suggested that I bought the screen (from the local dealer), brought it to them, they fitted it & I made a claim (my insurers were in agreement with this)...
Blank refusal.

Windscreen (OEM one) arrived three days in.
Windscreen fitted, Trim also done.
The fitting shop guys brilliant.

To my (feeble) reasoning (that concurred with the investigation by my insurers)
- NW get paid to fit a screen...thats thier core business
- They bill my insurers...there's no check other than me to check & question thecwork done. I'm quality control in the process
- They (NW) want to use non-OEM screens from the lowest cost sources - but levy a fitted cost of an OEM Pilkingtons one....as we found out later on with other screen jobs for other customers.
- That's National Windscreens, but guess the other providers do much the same. It's all about profit.

I have to ask just how compatible a non-OEM screen is ?
Is it the right specification safety wise ? .....not just the flukable CE compliance but LR standards TS 16949 wise.
Does it pose a risk to passengers.?...in the event of a claim will a non-OEM part prejudice the policy against
Does it fit ? ..... I mean will it leak....after all the stuff above if it did, is the type/make/shape/compatibility which can't be altered going to be bodged up with mastic or taken out & re-bonded.

Non OEM screens..
How does a supplier set up to make these ?
Where do they get thier patterns ?....surely not from same source as Pilkington.
Unlike say brake pads & tyres these are vehicle unique parts for a vehicle that in the grand scheme of things worldwide isn't that large.
What standards do they operate under ? .....any
What liability the screen fitting company has ?

My insurers (Abbey in Northern Ireland, a broker for the majors & specialist policies) took my issue really seriously - thier after sales service is exemplary.

In fairness to National Windscreens, they did mine with no bother at all.

I stipulated I wanted dealer genuine glass, they checked with my insurance co. A 2 day delay to order it in, but other than that, a good service.
New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.
Never had a 107, 90 or 127, but have had most of the rest!

Dundonian..

Nope
All done by phone calls .☎️

Emails That's the follow up.
We all use them

I'm not easily fobbed off especially if I have to live with something inferior
National Windscreens appear to do lots of company lease vehicles

If my ramblings help someone on here - purpose served.
