TomTom not Charging from ciggy socket but led is on help
D3 Commercial:
Looking for someone to point out the obvious for me, my sat nav (tomtom) will not charge from the two dash ciggy lighter sockets, the led on the usb adapter is on but not giving suffciant to charge, the battery light on the display goes away and the banner says battery charging, but the device still goes flat, so i bought a new tomtom and the same happens ( not happy) but i have a led roof mounted hazzard beacon and it works fine from the same power outlets, i have changed usb adapters ( 4 ) and still the same issue.... so i am getting power but i assume not enough to charge the tomtom, so i am open to suggestions.... but please not hunches, or post begining with i have not but it might be...
Thanks in advance

What is the amperage of the USB charger?
IIRC Tomtom charger chucks out around 1 amp but most USB adaptors will be around the 300mA area.De-Tango

Hi Sydney
Its the one that came in the box by tomtom, 1.2a
i have tried another original, but no joy either, plus two random others, but now you point out the amperage they were both 500ma so thats the reason there.. for them 2 not working.
Is the socket able to put out a amp or is it protected?

Off the top of my head the socket should be fused at a round 15 amps so you have plenty to play with, the USB will only draw what it needs so should be no where near that.
Have you tried them in any other 12 volt sockets just to confirm?De-Tango

hi
can u just get a multimeter to test the front and back cig outlets to compare them what amps there putting out
also plugging the tom tom in other outlets as suggested to rule the tom tom charger and lead out
ref the charger is it the fast charge one, where u have 2 x usb ports , really daft question it's not in the fast charge port is it
also when i bought a new tom tom it seems u have to hold the button in longer to turn it on and off, but always get a small light showing when it has power on the tom tom

How thick is the cable? I know that my tablet will use more amps than charging on a runnning map display unless I'm using a 2A USB cable. Most supplied are 1.2A which strangely isn't enough.Dave

Thank you all for your posts,
maybe if i list things,
its not a fast charge adaptor just the single usb.
The TomTom is brand new and yes it charges off the pc, off the wall socket using a Iphone adaptor, the old tomtom that i thought the battery was dead actually is fine if you charge it off the pc / wall socket.
the outlets in the car are all fine as i can run my CB radio and Roof mounted orange flashing beacon.
As for trying the nav in another car i have not as you can drive for near 4 hours before the battery goes flat, so maybe one day when the thing is flat i will use it in my RR and see if it gets full charge quickly.
I may pull the front facia panel off and change the cable as this is the only thing that i have not changed from the old one.
All i was trying to ascertain from the forum was if there was a choke or ballast somewere that would limit the ammount of amperage to the sockets, as has been pointed out they are on a 15amp which is more than enough then that is not the case, so cable it must be.
I will update once i have news
Regards
have a great weekend

Have I got this right. New TomTom (could still be faulty) but charges using pooter OK so ruling that out. Prob further up but missed it, but seprecate cable from ciggie socket 5v USB output? And if used in said pooter then should be OK. Ciggie socket also working as powers up CB etc. That just leaves whatever is in the ciggie socket, does it power up charge anything else? If yes then it's not up to the job got the TomTom, if no it's knackered. Try something like this bad boy https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00VH84L5...ref=plSrch , amps is king.
Simples. Unless I've missed something.

DSL thanks for the Link looks like i will make a purchase as thats a handy power output, laptop etc would help me in the feild that would....
Yes adapter is new and old one the same, there is charge going into the satnav, just not enough to replace the power being used, this is the issue, it says charging battery, and when you stop the car and switch off it shuts down as it detects the loss of power, what is not happening is the level of power incomming is not greater than the absorbstion rate by the device, hence why i asked have i missed something stupid like a maximum of 1 amp draw through the 2 front sockets.
As this is the sort of info that is not in the handbook but folk find out and have a work around.
Thanks for the link i will get one ..
