Post Service Coolant Level

Just wondering thoughts on this.

Just got car back from its 7 year service. Been in the garage for the last 2 days. The 7 year service is cam belts, fuel pump belts and aux belt and well as the usual other stuff.

I checked the oil before I fired it up at the garage and it showed OK at the full level of the scale.

I drove home for about 30 mins and maybe 20 miles, and thought I would just check under the bonnet for any obvious problems.

I noticed the coolant looked on the high side. Everything else looked fine. I know they have done stuff to the coolant system due to the belts.

I've just been outside again after it's stood for a couple of hours and the level is still the same:

No pressure in the cap or anything.

What do people think? Will it do any damage if overfilled or will it blow anything too much out? Also does the TDV6 engine bay get warm when it's been running for a while? I got a warm blast of air after I opened the bonnet straight after switching off!

Cant comment on the coolant level - but maybe just suck some out of the expansion tank if it doesn't settle?

And yes - the engine bay can get warm - assume your temp display is normal?? - if there was a problem - sure that would be a lot further north than usual?

Yeah everything seemed perfect on the drive home. Car sounded great, mpg normal, temp sat in normal location, but I'm sure they don't really show any real change!

I was just thinking if there might be an air lock or something? Would that show up in 30 minutes of driving?

Everything seemed fine, apart from the slightly high coolant level?

Yeah, I will.

Wish I had popped the bonnet before I left to have a look!

Check the expansion tank in the morning (when cold), the coolant should be at the top level of the cold line, if it's still full then remove some.

If they're expecting it to drop then it wasn't bled properly..

Also that's an assumption, there may be an airlock, or maybe not.. in which case you have too much coolant.. there are min and max levels for a reason, otherwise it would just be fill to spill

That's just my opinion, but that doesn't sound right to me.. I would take it back and ask them to check its bled correctly and fill the coolant to the correct level..

Because when you do the belts you drain off a lot of coolent and it takes a few days to settle down, if in a couple of days its still over the line then take some out, I would be more concerned if there was not any showing.

Flack Thumbs Up

That's basically what they said Flack Thumbs Up

I haven't actually driven it since getting it home, but they said it often drops on the cool down. Usually after a couple of runs. They said they usually overfill it a bit so that it never drops too low if people don't check the levels after the service, and like you say running low is a problem.

I do keep a good eye on all my levels, so will keep an eye on it. I'm heading on a 3hr round trip tomorrow, so will check it pre journey, middle and once it's cooled down again and see how the levels change.

There is still plenty of space in the expansion tank.
