Glow plug access

Glow plug access

Hi All,

I'm trying to do my glow plugs, but I'm a bit stuffed for access to them, you can see in the picture how far I have got, do I need to remove the black box circles, if so how? I'm assuming I do.

Also, you can see on the left circled the glow plug harness connector, do you just pull these or are they clipped, on the picture you can see the left one is off two plugs anyway?

Help would be appreciated.

Have you read all the threads on here? The GP's break off so easy!
Need an air gun on them really with controlled torque.

Don't kid yourself yours will be ok.

Yes that black breather thing will come out.
You need to lift it upwards first and then its a case of using brute force and squashing it out past top of engine.

Then I put some strong wire round the glowplug bars to lift upwards.


But I shouldn't be telling you any of this!

Being one of the 3 mentioned, Mike used a standard ratchet with an extension to remove the plugs and yes they came out with no problem! When replacing torqued them up to 10nm. As regards the plastic thingy at the back of the engine it was a case of twist shove and push, but it will come out. It took some choice words to get it back in but it did eventually go. As regards vibrating tools no where to be seen. Was there when Mike’s was delivered and he was working on a head that had various broken plugs in it. It didn’t make one iota of difference. Would add I have used injector cleaner for some time now and I think that made a difference as the plugs were not heavily sooted up so maybe this helped to make removal all that easier! Who knows
 Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

Hi

I did my glow plugs a couple of weeks ago using a Laser tools glow plug remover, I set it to the 20nm setting and held it on the plug until it came loose, some came out in 5 - 10 minutes others took longer but they all come out perfectly. I refitted the new plugs with a smear of high temp ceramic grease, not that I intend doing the job again.

ok, I put it back together, I'll probably give it another go. I do have a low torque 10nm-40nm air tool for glow plugs so hopefully that will work when I get access to them.

I also read the threads here, one chap tool the EGR cross pipe out as well. My hands are FKUC'd and I can't actually pull the clips off, let alone get the bolts off the back of the pipe. So I may have to get some help.

What I did do was to check the relays were ok an a continuity check on the glow plugs. 5 out of 6 were reading as an open circuit 0ohm one as 36ohm. So I think they are all done for.

Anyway, onwards and upwards, I'll have a chat with a couple of people locally to see if they can give me a hand.

Right so that black plastic odd shaped box with two pipes just pulls up? If so then I think I can get access to 5 of the glow plugs.

Is that correct? Also, whats it called, the black plastic thingy, the haynes manual is useless.....

When I did the Glow Plugs on my D4 I found I had access to all six plugs with the oil separator removed, although I did have to use a wobble coupling on the one next to the HPFP, which just happened to be the most stubborn one to remove!!!

passenger side ones are difficult for access.

Passenger head is also more difficult to remove

Right, got a mate of mine around last night took 45 mins to get all the bits off, I'm going to try to remove them this lunchtime after they have soaked in PlusGas for a few hours. I'm using a low torque air tool to get them out.

I'm gagging to have a go at removing the glow plugs on mine, but i'm too scared Confused no problems at the moment and only 66000 miles, but i'd like to get in there before any issues arise.
