D3 Rocksliders Question
Hi All, I've a question regarding the various different rock/tree sliders that are currently available for the D3. They all seem to bolt directly to the body/sill. It may be a silly question, but is there a reason that none bolt directly to the chassis rail? (as in the sliders available for some Toyota models) To my (untrained) mind it seems this would be an easier option, especially for someone considering a diy project.
I realise that bolting to both sill and chassis is probably a bad idea, I presume there should be a certain amount of flex/movement between the two that the body mounts allow for, but by fixing to the chassis it would allow some scope for adding protection for the compressor and air tank too.
The only down side I can see is a bit of a reduction in ground clearance?
Have I missed some very obvious reason not to do this?
Thanks in advance (and its my first post so please go easy.... )

all the bolt holes are present if you mount to the sill.
Also they wrap around the sill protecting it - not sure how you would do this if mounted on the chassis rail - which is a long way from the edge - so thing of the lever forces if you were to push on one mounted on the chassis rail - it would bend up - into the sill.Sill protection - LED internal lights - LED reverse lights - boot liner - Dog Guard - Rock sliders

Thanks Tom, that's pretty much what I was thinking myself until I came across pictures of sliders like the attached that are sold for some of the Toyota models (land cruiser & Hilux). It just got me thinking if something similar would work on the Discovery
Maybe aswell a question of prtecting what from what?!TDV6MY07-automatic-LHD-noDPF-iidbt-ffrrMod

The rock sliders are made to protect the sill, the tree sliders have the step/bar will push the truck off rocks/trees, and can be used as a step.Mantec sump guard.
Prospeed tree slider/steps.
Flack duel battery system.
18"Compomotive/AT3 tyres
Brembo 4pot front brakes
Sure!
Must say I'm Not at all supporter of the Step on things.
Don't Need it visualy or aswell as Not to enter my car.
Replaced my plastics by selfmade, 6mm aluminum Protectors.
Perry good fitting
Can only suggest this Solution. Cost me probbly 80€, both.

I actually like the steps, as well as the tree slider functionality they would be useful steps when lashing something to the roof, and perhaps deflect the odd car-park door ding.... I still can't figure out why the ones pictured above have a wider section towards the back, it seems to be a common feature on some slider designs.
I'd like to have a go at making these myself, and I've no way of folding metal ( like Markland did ) to fit around the sills, however, welding tubular or box section is no problem.
