Disco 3 key stuck in ignition, but also won't start car ?! |
|
Hi Folks, I'm a recent owner of an 08 Auto D3 that has just developed this fault:-
The key is stuck in the ignition, it'll turn the ignition on, but the engine doesn't turn over (all the lights come on etc), but also the key cant be pulled out at the 0 position?
I've read a few posts on here about the key being stuck but they all seem to be able to at least start the car and shift it in and out of park etc.
I'm suspecting that the gear shift isn't going all the way into park so not releasing, which would also prevent the engine from turning over, but not sure where to go from here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, its currently parked in the street unlocked with the key in, not that anyone could nick it Haha!

The pivot on the gearbox end of the gear selector cable can seize/ get stiff. There are some posts on hereabout it. Try pushing the selector leaver really hard forwards then try to take the key out. Disco 4

Let the car go to sleep, then try doing a hard reset and then remove the key. PAGODA

Thanks for the quick replies guys
Sailor Mike, I tried pushing the gear lever forward really hard, but still stuck
(The key's been in there for 2 days now so the battery is going a bit flat, i'll charge it in the morning if the rain stops)
Pagoda, How does one do a hard reset?
Cheers, H

Thanks Darrind, it worked!
Pressed the footbrake down, turned the sidelights on and the key released, nice one!
Do you have any idea what could have caused the problem?
(I'm sure its not related but I had both rear tyres changed and the wheel allignment done the previous evening?)

I would get the fault codes read.
This is unrelated to your problem, What are your front tyres like? All the tyres should have a simular rolling circimfrance or you will get problems

At a guess I would say its the gearbox linkage that has seized, but it could also be the gearbox wiring connector, or possibly a dodgy battery or brake switch/bulbs.
If it is the linkage its easy to fit either a new linkage pivot bit where the cable clamps onto the selector- or you can just take it apart clean all of the rust from the existing one and free it up, grease it well and then refit.
There is a connection between the operation of the brakes and allowing the vehicle to come out of park, it can sometimes refuse to recognise the car is in park due to a wiring issue but oddly if you put the side lights on it allows something to earth and it seems to be enough to get rid of the issue whilst the side lights are on. Just one of those odd LR things!
Also if you get a fault coming up with the transmission when first starting the car and selecting drive, if you put the lights on first before coming out of park it stops the fault coming up!
Ultimately there is a fix that needs to be done somewhere, but at least you can get the key out and after you've got some charge into the battery get the car started hopefully Must stop buying shiny toys....
