All, so sadly, very true. Rolling Eyes

How many points for declaring that you are "proud of your own bigotry because it's a virtuous, liberal bigotry"? Laughing

Their self righteous pronouncements always remind me of much of what George Orwell saw in others on the Liberal Left.

Lol

Thats very funny LFW.

However it says more about your 'possible' bigotry than anything else.

Most liberals I know (me included), just want all people to be treated decently.
Is that too much to ask?

What's wrong with women being treated equally?

The point is that the virtue signalling that people undertake is not about treating people fairly, not about helping people, not about achieving something - it is purely about saying "Ooh, look at me. I'm nicer than you." for nothing more than self-satisfaction. There's nothing wrong with holding opinions or wanting/trying to help; there is something wrong when those opinions are just flaunted for show. It's all the more of a problem because it's competitive and the lines of political correctness are constantly being redrawn to be more and more absurd in order to maintain them as a status symbol.

There you go, that virtue signalling again.

There's NOTHING wrong with it, it is you looking to be outraged and letting us know what a caring liberal you are.

Never missing an opportunity to shout out your right on credentials.

It seems you know me better than I know myself. Shocked

Treating all people decently seems to me to be the fundamental idea behind all liberal thought. Its the purpose behind some of that stuff that gets abused by a few idiots.

Can I assume that you don't believe in treating people decently?

I went to football terraces in the 80's where I saw abuse of Black players. I lived in the East End of London for 20 years and I saw some horrible stuff done to asian immigrants. Do you know anyone who likes having dog poop pushed through their letterbox?

It seems to me that the 'PC' movement, while going too far sometimes, has lead to a society where this sort of abuse is much less acceptable.

Maybe you think we should go back to those halcyon days?

LFW,

You seriously think there are huge numbers of these people who just go around being 'liberal' to show off?

Really?

I'm as liberal as you get and I don't know anyone like that. A few people go too far but its the same with any movement. Tories who go too far end up as U kippers, U kippers who go to far end up as Nazis.

It doesn't mean all Tories are Nazis. Does it?

I just read your views on DM readers on the other thread, appears you don't believe that they should be treated decently because they hold views different to your own.

FWIW, I don't read the DM, it's the self righteous, virtue signalling of publicly denouncing the DM and it's readership that amuses me. The bigotry of the free thinking liberal. Exactly what this thread is about.

Rolling with laughter

You are the one shouting about this. LFW started the thread. Us show off liberals are just responding to your outrage.

You two are certainly strange beasts. Sheep Sheep Very Happy

The problem with the PC movement is that it is not about being nice to people - it's not about manners or politeness. What it is is the view that there are some views that it is unacceptable to hold or express, in any way. Political correctness only occurs from the point at which you decide tolerance isn't enough. That's fundamentally intolerant and illiberal, and it keeps changing for the very reason that the aim is always to be a cut above everyone else, not to make people nicer - so when something is adopted into general usage, the PC brigade must change it and come up with something more extreme.

At the end of the day, such a process of ratcheting intolerance leads not to a more tolerant and polite society but to a backlash from those who end up held in contempt.

Mmmm.

I didn't start that DM thread. I pointed out specific facts about the Daily Mail and gave my opinions that I think are based in fact.

I dislike unsubstantiated ranting as much as the next person.

However, reasoned discussion based on fact and related opinions is surely how we should conduct ourselves.
At least thats how I try to conduct myself. If I can't argue my point logically and based on fact then I won't try.

Now, I'm off to play some golf. Have a lovely day whether you are a Daily Mail reader or not.

One last go - are there really LOTS of these people? Again, I haven't come across them.
