Helping friends for a beer in return: just perfect!
In which department do You work again, philipp? At JLR, or what organisation was it? Do You work there under normal condition, or do You have to pay tax?
The fact You're selling goods from Your job in this forum is probabley aswell against forum or majesties rulez?!

Lets be clear, none of my parts are JLR property and never have been.
Re tax, I pay what I have to, but if I can pay less, I will. I appreciate some of the services I get for that tax, but with 57% of my tax last year going to welfare (from my tax breakdown statement), I am not going to feel guilty if I can save a bit.
I can't find a site sponsor who wants to fix my EPB, so I am going to end up furnishing my local indy with £1100 to replace it. Admittedly some will be too far away from me, but not all from what I can tell.

Actually, lets be honest here.
I will avoid tax if I can. I smoke, but haven't bought a packet of them in 3 years in this country. I go away enough to be able to bring back the legal limit every month or two.
If I had enough money to use a tax reduction scheme, I would, and not feel an ounce of guilt.
Lots of the tax we pay is up the wall by government (not just this one, but all of them) and used for their own personal benefits.
So no, I am not going to feel guilty. They get fooking thousands out of me.

*Sticks head above kerb ...*
The thing is, when you look at the bigger picture it's not just about how guilty (or not) anyone feels about contributing to the 'black economy'.
Someone mentioned taking their vehicle to the local independent specialist to sort out ... OK, it would've been nice if they could've found a site sponsor to do it, but I guess it's not to be.
The point is, that local indy will have taken the trouble to set themselves up properly in business - perhaps by registering as a sole trader, or maybe by incorporating a limited company (with all the complications that ensue). Either way, it's probably been no small amount of hassle to set up as a trading entity, find a suitable location (which will probably involve paying rent, business rates, etc.), deal with the business accounts, perhaps registering for VAT if their turnover is high enough, etc. So by taking your business to that local independent, your money is going back into the local economy - not to mention allowing them to feed and house their family, pay for their kids' dance classes and football coaching, and so on. All the things which they rely on their business (in which they probably invest a huge amount of time and effort) to be able to do.
If someone else did this work - someone who, perhaps, has a full-time job in an unrelated industry, and who was happy to do it outside his house for half the price, cash in hand and not a word to HMRC wink wink - then perhaps when there was a much larger job which needed doing, too complex for the 'driveway warrior' to tackle, and the local indy has had to close down due to not enough jobs coming through the door, would the vehicle owner have any right to complain when the only remaining option was their nearest main dealer who'd charge them twice what the indy would've charged?
NB - I'm not pointing any fingers at anyone in particular - just trying to state the case for one particular take on the debate. I'm self-employed myself, in an industry which has its share of 'weekend warriors' who hold down full-time jobs elsewhere, or young people who have much enthusiasm but very little experience, who have zero overheads because they still live with mum and dad, and who are happy to offer their services on their weekends off from college in return for a fee of nine-tenths of feck-all, none of which the tax man ever gets to hear about.
Hmm, bit of a rant, that - sorry!
