Blowing Black Smoke
Car has started very recently blowing out black smoke and need to accelerate hard to get the car going, eventually kicks in.
hasn't done this for long time, recently serviced at 157,000.
It has had a new intercooler hose last year.
I only fill up with Shell or BP at worst.
What could be the problem?

Fuel brand is not you problem as it all comes from the same depots to different branded outlets and is to the EU Spec.
Was the fuel filter and air filter renewed at service time?

The problem is it's a 3 ton lump with the aerodynamics of a breeze block.
Nothing to worry about mines is similar,
Got silicon intercooler hose and disco Mikey serviced it in April and just over 100000 miles
Also had EGR's blanked and a remap, a few years ago
So what's wrong with mine as well?

Yep. Fuel, air and oil filters all changed annually.
I put a blue silicone hose on in 2012 but that split surprisingly last year.

If not intercooler hose, then most likely stuck/ failed egr's
