New shocks required or something else ....

I'm after a bit of advise based on other members experience with sorting out the rough ride on D3 with air suspension .

To start with the symptoms I'm experiencing are:
- I feel ever bump and hitting a seam in the road shakes the car.
- front dives under breaking
- front seems pushes out under hard cornering.
- Under very light breaking, e.g. resting my foot on the peddle, there is a little vibration through the steering and whole car.
- car doesn't feel that stable under breaking
- breaking isn't that positive

What has been done lately:
- all the lower arms have been replaced in the last 16k miles
- steering rack was replaced in the last few weeks and 4 wheel aligned
- drop links are original but have been checked and are OK
- all 4 wheel bearings have been replaced in the last 10k miles
- borg and beck V8 disks have been fitted in the last 10k miles

Issues I know:
- the NSF lower arms bush has some play in it but not enough to knock under emergency breaking
- the cap on the dryer for the compressor leaks very slightly, it had been glued but has opened a bit. Going to get a compressor refurb kit from x8r.co.uk to change the piston seal, dryer cap, filters and beads.
- compressor seems to run on a bit but the suspension works fine and goes up and down with no issues and quite quickly.
- the original suspension has done 142k miles

I believe that the answer will be to replace the shocks but want to understand if there are other things I should look at to start with before layout a large amount of cash.

are you going to the ELROC pub meet next week? ill bring mine and if you inspire me with confidence, ill let you have a go to compare......

Mine drove like absolute Censored but i have just changed rear upper arms, a rear pannard rod and a front track rod end and it feels ok now.

My old mondeo was like a blomonge with its handling and the only thing that fixed it was 4 new shocks.

My disco is at 133k on a 56 and i would love to put new shocks on it but its a massive cost so its just not going to happen.

I believe my ride has deteriorated now the tyres are amost at end of their life. When I change them in a month or so, i will know for sure.

If you've replaced most of the bushes, well worth getting the height sensors recalibrated. If one is out, the car wallows and pitches like a sinking ship and will shudder through the bumps like a fat bird on a trampoline.

Mark, unfortunately I will be out of the country next week on business so I won't be at the meet.

Was your suspension really harsh/hard before you changed the bits mentioned?

Regarding the logo it's meant to be my defender 90. I can't take credit for it as I found it on the net.

Hi Andy,

Mine felt like it had rear wheel steering when cornering fast, it used to completely unnerve me ever since I got it (4 months ago), it was so bad I even had the esp kick in a few times where is was probably trying to correct what it thought was oversteer.

I'd say it's never felt harsh, have u poly-bushed it? This apparently makes it harsh?

What I will say is I've had experience of cars which felt like crap, upon testing the lower arms seemed ok but once changed it transformed the cars handing and ability.

Did u use a good quality lower arm?

Only time I had the lights come on was when I had a flat back tyre.

The arms fitted were standard land rover ones so shouldnt be too hard.

After replacing all the rubber in the suspension and replacing all the struts the only thing that cured the harsh ride on my D3 was re calibrating the height sensors Thumbs Up

Interesting. I can't remember but it think the suspension might have felt harsher after cleaning get out the dryer on the compressor.

Was it the fact the car was running at the wrong height all round or just in one corner that caused the issue?

I did check my heights a while back and they seemed in tolerance. Did you take it to a garage to get it done and if so how much did it cost roughly? I know a guy with the kit to do it but heard you need to do it on a perfectly level floors.

There was a definite improvement with new struts because the dampers were 120k old and the ride was bouncy but before I calibrated the suspension it felt very hard - as you say, I felt every rut and defects in the road sent shudders through the shell. I was running with high tyre pressures (why? don't know, tinkering on my part) so I have since let them down to 33/36 and after the calibration the hard ride is resolved.

Why does the poor calibration result in a poor ride - I don't know. presumably it's down to regulation of the crossover valves which are meant to allow air to flow between airbags on the same 'axle'- someone on here will know.

The process is easy IF you have an IIDtool or a similar diagnostic tool. You find a nice flat bit of concrete on which to park, set the car into tight tolerance mode, measure the heights between the middle of the hub of each wheel and the top of the wheelarch. Then correct one side so it's the same as the other side using the provided GAP Diagnostic spreadsheet, or someone else's from here (I think Armalites has one in his gallery) and then calibrate the overall height of each 'axle'. Probably best done with a 'normal load' on board.

The improvement isn't immediate funnily, but over a couple of journeys you'll notice the difference.

As a bit of an update, I have stripped and rebuilt my compressor. Seems a bit better, but not the magic carpet ride. Next thing will be to reset the ride hight.

As a side note, how long should the compressor run. First thing in the morning it runs for a few mins, but the suspension has dropped overnight. After that it only runs for 30 secs each time the car is started.

The suspension shouldn't drop much overnight.

If my compressor runs first thing it usually just for ten or so seconds...(never timed it!)
It should run as and when required once on the go

How quickly does it rise from Access to offroad height?
