Today I was going to replace my worn out key fob body which I've been meaning to do since I got my LR3 in 2013. Back in 2013 I hastily ordered a new key once discovering that neither of my two key fobs worked to lock/unlock (dead batteries).
It took a couple weeks to get the new key and I learned the battery and key fob body can be replaced so I fixed both of my keys while waiting for the new key. No longer needed, I tried to sell the new un-programmed key to a friend with an LR3 but the shop was unable to program it to his truck. I gladly took it back and set it aside almost forgetting about it.
Today I went to grab a replacement body for my well worn key fob and saw the un-programmed new key sitting there. What to do? Spend time cutting open my worn out key bob or go and try to program the new key? I'm so lazy I chose to go program the new key with my IID Tool. It took me longer to find the menu option than the actual programming part.
Now I have 3 working keys for my truck! But still need to replace the body on the other key...someday! 8)1998 Discovery LSE - Gold, 249,000+ miles, completely stock

stuck a sqrewdriver through my finger changing the case, right of a job. way better idea you got the mate
I know this is an old thread, but I used snap ring pliers to open the case and soldered in a new rechargeable battery to the PC board, then inserted it all into a new case. Used the IIDTool to also program 2 new keys, so have 4 working LR3 keys now...1967 Ford Bronco 289 V8 (1968)

I didn't realize 4 was possible! I've been enjoying 3 the last few years and 3 is very useful. I bought 2 Chinese complete keys a few years ago and they have worked flawlessly. Maybe one day I'll do the precision track repair required to restore my second original key. But it's bottom of the list behind many other items!
Well 4 is all I need to ensure that I'll never ever lose one and only have 1 left. When I replaced the batteries I did not re-use the original battery cases, they were basically destroyed during the removal process, and the Chinese ones I bought were also rechargeable, so that was a bonus!1967 Ford Bronco 289 V8 (1968)

On a D3 you can program I think up to 16 keys. After that I believe it's "game over" for the BCM but even then it might be possible to delete the key history, but that's only a guess. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
I've heard up to 30-odd keys but in my case it was the 2 originals (with new batteries and cases) plus the two supposedly poor Chinese copies (they worked perfectly and were functionally rechargeable). The hype about some of the electronics is likely true in some cases, but careful research usually determines what is true and what is BS regarding Land Rover parts in general. My own personal experiences would indicate that some dealers/retailers overprice their parts depending on the "brand name" on the part, like some Ford parts used on JLR D3/LR3 vehicles... 1967 Ford Bronco 289 V8 (1968)
