What about this masterpiece - manufactured from car window shades - it did the job.

It looks like something that should be put in the oven and baked on 250C for 30 minutes
Looks apart, it is a very neat job. ALTHOUGH, I don't think I would like to be following you with the sun glaring off it!! regards
Peter

You could be mistaken for the Space Shuttle re-entering the atmosphere
I just picked up a sheet o polycarbonate (Lexan tm) with UV protection. It wasn't cheap for a 1300*635*3mm rectangle at $110 inc GST. I still need to cut it and then work out the best fixing method.

PCH,
do ypu need any tips on working with poly?
I use it a bit and you have to use a fine tooth jigsaw bit to cut it nicely. It does heat up and can tend to melt the poly to the bit unless you kep moving!! regards
Peter

pbhawkin,
I haven't cut polycarbonate before except for the type used for roof sheeting and I took to it with a angle grinder but in this case I was going to buy a jigsaw blade for plastics.
The guy told me that you need to move slowly with the jigsaw and then clean up the edge with emery cloth. He also told me that if i was fixing with screws to drill the hole bigger than what I need (same as roof sheeting) to cater for expansion.
Got any tips for fixing with a suitable "hook" and "loop" tape that can handle getting wet. I know the normal Velcro you buy at Spotlight, the adhesive will fail when wet. In my wife's car headlight protectors they have a very course "hook" and "loop" tape in a couple of places and this works well.

You could try using exterior grade double sided tape. I used it for fixing things often. You could just remove it afterwards and use new each time. Getting there is half the fun

I cut the polycarbonate last night and now need to buy the Velcro.
The Victorian Velcro Sales Rep came out to my office today and spoke to me about my requirements. Obviously he was not that busy.
The rep showed me an industrial moulded hook MVA#8 with 0172 adhesive backing that is moisture resistant. The hooks require a great deal of force to pull apart from the loop and has high shear strength. The MVA#8 is used in automotive, caravans, industrial situation where the items are not to be separated frequently. This suits me and if I buy 23 mtrs it will last a long time.
Website for the MVA#8 is found here: http://www.velcro.com.au/velcro/files/MVA_8%20Moulded%20Hook.pdf

Has anyone tried an Obies out back window saver, was just quoted $195.00 plus $35 postage.
Looks like it is a clear sheet of perspex cut to size and attached with Velcro.

Chris - I picked up my polycarbonate cut to size last week - wondered about the strength of velcro required - did you take delivery yet? Any spare - or a reference to the rep please?
Thanks,
Simon

Simon,
Just ring Velcro Australia and go directly there (if you can) and ask for a cash sale at the front reception. You can buy it in roughly 20m rolls.
I found that the velcro didn't stick as well as I had liked on the polycarbonate and had to make some trip repairs by scratching the sheeting to rough it up and get the velcro to stick better. So with this in mind if you use velcro then use sandpaper on the sheet where you will stick the velcro and it will stick better. I put the furry part (loops) on the rear window glass and the hooks on the sheet.
Take a few metres spare on your trip justy in case it needs replacement.
