Gear stick just fell to the side, free play. any help please
Hi everyone, so yesterday, being 50 miles away from home, suddenly, my gear stick fell to the side, literally free to move around in any direction, i opened up the section and saw the rod that connects the gear box (i think) to the gear stick had come off, so i thankfully, put it back in, drove for a bit then on the motorway, it clicked off again. i pulled to the side, put it back together with some tape and drove home, i got home safely. im wondering why this happened? i called the garage that replaced my clutch ( which has sparked a hell of a lot of problems already so im going back tomorrow) and they said they didnt touch that bit. is this correct? that you dont need to remove the gear stick, to get the clutch replaced? if so how can i get this sorted? does anyone know how much it will cost? its fairly worrying
Thanks

I think you're referring to another possible manual gearbox fault CGA.
The fault you describe includes a difficulty selecting gears especially 1st and reverse this is something else.
CJP, the linkage has been known to come adrift. If you've fixed it once with little more than tape, a more permanent fix should be within your capabilities, i.e. incorporating a bolt and nut. Mods:
Front Fogs + Halos
FBH Remote Control

Garmin Nuvi + D4 Surround + Reversing Camera.
D4 Steering Wheel.
Rear Boot Spoiler.
Twin Brake Lights.

I'm not scared, I'm outta here.

I had this
It is a slide on clip, i got mine from the LR dealers about £12. From memory it comes with O rings and grease.
Might pay to pop into dealer and check on their system to get a part no

for those that ever have this trouble, just spoke to landrover, and it seems, the part number for that is ULA500030
about £9 something + VAT.
waiting on a reply from hugeviking to clarify if its a DIY job.
thanks!

i think it can be done, i had a look at another post in this forum and saw that it can be done removing the ac unit and radio to get the centre console out, i was wondering, did you get 3 oring seals with the part or 2?
thanks

When i had to do mine it was the other end to the one in your picture, the end that connects to the gearbox. I had to remove the centre cubby box assy and i think the H trim, the gear stick knob and TR controls, then a metal plate that is secured around the gear stick apature with about 12 torx fixings just for access. Mayby other odd bits as well. The job itself took about 5 mins.
I think you should be able to do the gearstick end quite easily, you just need to be able to get two hands in.
Everything you need should be in the kit, from LR dealers anyway.
It is a ULA500030 clip you need. It can be fitted from inside . Only the gear lever gaiter needs loosening. Slide a piece of wood or flat bar down the side of the linkage with a bungee on the top to lever the linkage into place. Loop some thread to the clip as it is fiddly and you may drop it a few times. I think 5th gear gave the best access.
Good luck.
