Standard Sat Nav Replacement - Hack In progress

All,

Appears views are mixed on the standard Denso sat nav more importantly its an expensive unit to replace when it stops reading discs, (although I have found 2 fixes and one possible quick fix if the 'No MAP DVD fitted' occur, brief details below ask if more interested).

However main point. I'm trying to make a hardware device that fits in place of the standard unit and either runs its own nav system from OpenSource software low cost parts or better will put Android OS onto the existing screen with all the benefits of Android includeeign full app suite. I appreciate most users will happily replace the under seat box but do not wish to rip the dash apart. The nub of the question is however does anyone know how the audio mixing of the satnav voice occurs. Does the NAv unit signal the audio unit via canbus to fade and mix or is it a simple as when the audio is sent from the sat nav the rest of the system auto fades, or even does it use a pre-tone similar to traffic new updates? The rest of the interfaces / problems should be quite easy to resolve it's just this point I need to determine. Any advice welcome, can't find anything anywhere on this either LR / Jag / Toyota or others that use a Denso system.

(as mentioned earlier to fixes for the 'No Map DIsk fitted' type error -

1) Double check the lock / unlock on the dvd drive and or operate a few times - This gets worn with movement vibration of the vehicle and can creep. Eject and re-install disc a couple of times as internal carridge can misalign and ejection can cause it to realign and disc will read again.

2) Apparently Laser heads can become worn out - replacement part about £15 on ebay - Jaguar forums have details on how to change (or even adjust) this needs a more technically brave person for either.

3) replacement of the drive mechanism possible as complete unit - circa $130 (yes dollar) part number DVS-3010 (google DVS-3010 mechanism) fairly easy replacement for less technically brave.

Thanks for posting this. I've been putting off replacing mine but will try the suggested fixes.

Like the idea of something based on a pi / open data. It could update itself through your wifi when you got home too! I'd offer to help out working out how the audio mixing works but need to get mine working first!

It is done with the MOST bus ( fibre optic).

I ripped out the whole goddam mess and replaced it with a kenwood double din system including all the bells and whistles and replaced the screen with an iPad mini, that alternates between displaying ordnance survey data when green laning and spotify when crusing Twisted Evil

I have wifi in the car but as you said, it also connects to my home network too

 D3 07 SE - still going strong
D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten

DS23MAN - Is that your video? Or where is the source, who is good contact if you know.

Not sure that it is via the MOST based on a really useful resource on the denso unit and the under seat unit is not connected to the MOST bus directly but has audio out, unless my reference docs are wrond

See pics. The sat nav unit is not on the MOST bus only the screen.

I need to check but sure the connections HIT are for the touch input, will put o/scope on them to decode.

When I get time I can put the DENSO diagnostic in a suitable location as a reference for all. Hopefully tonight.

It's a video from Blackbox solutions. As you can see in your wiring diagram, all audio and control runs on the MOST Bus.

Agreed main audio on the most bus but the SAT NAV UNIT and screen have a direct audio (labelled 'VOICE') link.

I can only assume this either causes an auto fade on teh rest of the system or has a precursor tone (inaudible) that causes the fade.

The diagrams are a lot clearer in the originals

These may be useful to anyone who needs them

I think the fade command is done on the can bus between the dvd and display. The display translates this to the MOST Bus.
