2016 D4 Landmark - What Wheels & Tyres for a better ride ?
Whilst I am generally delighted with my Landmark, in rural Hampshire where the potholes grow every day, I find the ride unacceptably harsh. It's currently on 20" wheels shod with Pirelli Zeros.
As you will see from this thread I have contemplated fitting Compomotive 18" Wheels, or other 18" wheels with spacers, & have received some good advice, for which many thanks.
However I'm still vacillating between the choices:-
1. Fit Compomotive 18" wheels - expensive, and at least one expert has reservations; or
2. Fit 18" wheels & spacers - not much user comment which would be appreciated, Financially the best solution for me as I have a set of perfect 18" wheels & part used tyres; or
3. Fit 19" D4 wheels - less expensive, but will a 1" reduction in size improve the ride much? or
4. Stick with the existing 20" wheels & fit 255/55/20 tyres which may improve the ride somewhat.

What section tyres are fitted now? I assumed all 20" where 255 X 55, it's the 55 bit and pressure that counts. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Im in Hampshire myself and running 19s on 255/55/19 Goodyear Duratracs, and I would still like to go to 18s. The roads in Hampshire are a disgrace2003 BMW M5- 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

Visiting from the RR Sport forum:
The tyres I have on at present are 255 x 50 x R20, which I believe are standard. I can go to 255 x 55 x R20 - but that's only a 5% increase in wall height so I'm not sure what improvement in ride that would give.
In so far as tyre pressures are concerned I have reduced them by 4 psi all round, which is probably as far as is prudent.

Has anyone actually fitted 18's with spacers to a D4 with the full size brakes?
If so, which style?
I tried the 2008 MY 18" SE wheels, and they only just rub - turn easily, but scratch the paint on the wheel. I am not convinced that a spacer would have solved it.
I'm toying with fitting 255 55 20 GGAT3's to mine next. These will obviously give the same sidewall height as 255 55 19, but would logically require agreement of insurer.
FWIW, I'm also not convinced that the ride is significantly worse on 20" than 19". Biggest difference comes from age/wear of the tyres, being noticeably more compliant when on new rubber and 32/36 psiLong succession of Disco's since 2001...
SIII Lightweight - neglected & rusting. Bulkhead, A panels, vent panel & outriggers now disintegrated - Next years project!

I've driven my D4 HSE's and Landmark's on 18", 19" and 20" rims. There is a noticeable difference in ride quality when you drop from 20" to 19", the later providing more cushioning. It's not a huge difference though. However the 19"s are far less easy to damage and the additional sidewall height is a much more noticeable improvement off road than it is on road. Plus you can run the awesome Land Rover approved Pirelli ATR tyre in the correct 255-55-19 size.
The 18" Compomotive's are just a step on from the 19"s and more noticeable on road, far more cushioning and comfortable than the 20"s, but still perfectly acceptable if you do need to press on. Probably 60% or more of my mileage is motorway and the 18"s make the Landmark a more relaxing and comfortable long distance cruiser. You'd be very unlucky if you damaged them on road and off road they're much less likely to incur damage and of course the extra sidewall height has several significant advantages when off road driving.
I looked at as much information as I could find on the Compomotives inc. the Australian Green Oval Experience site:
I always think the Australians know a thing or two about off-road driving and any product used extensively over there will be more than capable enough for my use. Reading about Dr German's experiences with the 18" Compomotive rims was reassuring.
Dr German is a research scientist, holding a PhD in Computer Science, degrees in Engineering, and was a university lecturer for many years, so teaching the complexities of the new Land Rover systems to the lay-person is his specialty. He has also successfully run a standard D3 and Range Rover Sport in 4WD competition for 5 seasons, winning his class against modified and highly modified vehicles. He is one of only a handful of people in the world to do this.
I've no experience of using spacers on any vehicle. I've heard too many negatives about them from race and rally mechanics I've spoken to. You'll find all of these on a quick search of the Internet. No doubt they'll be some who will disagree with me, but personally I'd feel ill at ease running such a heavy vehicle on spacers, especially when increasing the stresses by driving off road.
I've never driven a D4 on 55 profile 20" tyres, but I suspect the difference would be hard to detect.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

i went from 18" to 19" on my NYC D3 and I can tell the difference. The 18" is a more comfy ride and there is more tire if you do the occasional off road.

SafariDave - On my D3 (LR3) I moved from 19" to 17" much better ride & off-road performance with GG AT tyres.
Now I have a D4 and am looking to do something similar.
Latest update - I have heard directly from a friend that he didn't fit Compomotives because of concerns about clearances & the possibility of debris fouling.

Sounds as if you've talked yourself out of Compomotives. That's a shame, they're a popular fit in Australia and South Africa and I've not heard of any issues.

There's not a lot of clearance between the calliper and rim when fitted, but the rims certainly have been proven to work in the field and come from a well-respected name in aftermarket industry who have supplied the likes of Bowler, makers of the famed Wildcat.

Would love to get some Compmotives but just can't justify the price. I have a set of virtually new 18" ATRs in the shed that I can't use on my D4.

£1,000 should buy you a brand new set of 4 and I've used a 19" rim with ATR as the spare.

An essential purchase Del, you need to use those ATR's. Plus they're nigh on impossible to damage and hold their value well compared to oe LR rims.

I see the logic but I doubt it will get past "that" look.
