Is there a split battery thread that hasn't lost images?

I've read many an excellent thread on here about fitting a second battery system, but going back through them now I want to do it it seems like Photobucket has done it's worst to the links (as I realise that no one wants to pay the £400 to keep the links active)

Has anyone put together a 'how to guide' in a PDF somewhere perhaps?
Or a list of the bits required?

Thanks very much in advance
Ben

I'm hoping to charge batteries than have this spec:
5700mAh
LiPo

possible through a multi charger so 4 at a time.
ideally I'd like to have a regular UK 3 pin plug socket via an inverter (I think) as all my chargers are 3 pin compliant already)

Anyone else done this and had more than just a 12V socket???

Ben,
You might want to do your reading about batteries and charging systems before you set your beloved disco on fire.

Have a look and or a chat with the sterling family:
https://sterling-power.com/

One thing for sure: lipo calls for more than just a relay...

Godspeed and may the spark stay away from you!

thanks df_tom,

I know that LiPos are a bit volatile at the best of times - I'm a camera man and often in 'remote' locations filming. when I've gone through my 7 batteries and it's looking like I'll need more I really need a charging system on board as apposed to having to find the nearest building with a spare plug.

will read through your link.

thanks v much
Ben

D'oh. At first read I thought you wanted to hook those lipos directly...
Cant you get a lipo charger with 12 volt input?

Converting 12 to 230 ac, then feeding 230 ac to a unit that rectifies it down to something about 7 to Xx V DC cannot be the most sensible and effective way. Rc modelling community might be worth a look.

If and when my d3 survives the upcoming towing orgy, I'll be looking for a DC-dC1220 and a proper 72 Ah lead acid cycle resistant battery.

Fair point.
Most of the chargers do have a 12v option so perhaps I'll just go with those rather than add in another stage with the inverter.

Ben, I posted a very similar question some time ago and the general feeling was, unless you're prepared to spend a huge amount of money on a suitable charger, continue using your inverter. Rolling Eyes

Details are here but be warned, the 12v to 12v chargers were stupid money and made the whole process unviable: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic118219.html

This however, ( as recommended by forum member Boyd ) just might be your answer but still a little pricey: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Optimate-DC-12V-...Sw9r1WCWfU

How about a little generator?

I do have one that I use in an emergency when no electrics and the sun is not behaving itself

Probably more expensive option than the 12v to 12v though (And a bit noisy at times Rolling Eyes )

The only things about a generator are the noise but also the space.
When I'm on location and I've got all the equipment in the back and the weather is a bit crap it's much easier to have everything to hand and accessible from the boot and sheltered under the rear hatch.

I really like the neatness of the split charge install and how it doesn't take up any valuable space.

No solution is off the table at the moment, and I've got a bit of time to read through and explore options Smile

Have you thought about speaking to a caravan dealer or camper van converter. They fit Split charge systems so might be able to advise or do it.

I fitted a TMax system in my car attached to an Oddessy battery. My car is manual so the route through the bulkhead is different, but once through I fed my power to the rear quarter via the driver side sill to a fused 12v socket. I use it to run an inverter that powers my Mac and printer as well as various chargers for equipment batteries. I fitted it myself and the most challenging bit was figuring out how to remove the rear panels.

There are some pictures in my gallery.
