Any suggestions !! My 56. Disco 3 has a very annoying rubbing sound. It only appears after the car's been running for a while and up to temperature. It's more apparent when moving off in 1st and 2nd gear but think it's always in the background but difficult to hear with road noise. It stops when you lift off the throttle...so only when under load. It's also at a constant speed....doesn't get quicker as you speed up. Thought it might be the o/s/f cv joint as there was some movement in it and also the wheel bearing was a bit worn so both were replaced, no change. All other wheels were checked and ok. It can't be heard outside when driving along with the window open. It also seems to be coming from the front area of car, not rear. The car drives fine, pulls away and changes up and down gears with no issues. Auto box had full flush and oil change done last year. What's puzzling me is that the sound doesn't change speed but stops when you lift off. It's also not a metallic noise.....driving me crazy.....have turned up the music to stop me listening for it

Sounds like the usual torque converter noise.

If it's the torque converter is it a sign that there's impeding doom or can I just live with it

Folk on here say it's not related to nearing end of life.
Think mine is getting more noticeable but it could just be I'm listening out for it!

Having read a number of posts on tc noise am I correct in thinking that the tc should be replaced sooner rather than later to avoid gearbox issues? Currently the gearbox seems to be fine. If so how long will I have before gearbox issues appear. That's presuming the noise is tc related. Car only does about 4K miles a year so not hard pushed.

Now that I'm listening for things, I noticed a slight vibration around 50-60 mph as well as rubbing noise... a bit like wheel balance being out at rear and wondered if this may be the start of gearbox issue or it could in fact be a wheel balance issue. Will get that checked first. Was wondering if I should put a bottle of Dr Tanny or Lucas Transmition Fix in to see if that stops anything. If it stops the rubbing noise then it definitely points to gearbox/ TC issues.

up date on noise.
Took it to Mackie Transmissions in Glasgow who had a listen but they couldn't confirm what the noise was. They thought it might be the TQ but couldn't be sure. So I decided to have the TQ out to get it checked. Had the TQ replaced & the autobox stripped & refurbed....seemed sensible to do when it was out as there was some signs of metal damage inside TQ. All back together now....but noise still there Still, the autobox is a lot sweeter now!!!
By chance got the number of a local mechanic who was LR trained from the taxi driver who was taking me to pick up the Disco. Took it to him & he thinks the noise is coming from the tensioner bearing for the fuel pump belt...certainly very noisy when the stethoscope is placed on it. Going in at end of week to get it replaced so will let you know

The high pressure pump (HPFP) was the suspect so pretty sure thats whats been changed.?
I've had an awful reverberating blade slapping type noise from the front end under throttle,
it's at its worst at low rpm and mid-high range torque, really becomes apparent at around 90000kpa fuel pressure and becomes louder with increased fuel pressure although the noise doesn't change speed.
I'm around 80% sure its HPFP related as I triple dosed Millers ecomax this morning and over the 30miles i traveled it has cut the sound and vibration by around two thirds.
Now I just need to throw 500 quid at it in the hope I'm right,
struggled to find any posts on here that involve this type of noise and vibration caused by the same driving style. FYI its possible to feather the throttle in and out and make the sound/vibraton come and go in correlation with live fuel pressure stats.
Would love to hear from anyone that's suffered the same fate and sorted the problem.(Jimmac aside of course) thanks for the reply btw
Things I don't believe it is
front or rear Diff both had oil changed and no signs of wear and no whining
rear prop (New)
wheel bearings as it only happens under load
gearbox as it makes the sound during a change up or down
TC as i have no other symptoms and its had a double oil change recently
injectors all look clean with no leaks and all have very similar offset of between 890-1016
no fault codes logged but sometimes feels a little hesitant

Was the hp pump at back of engine that was replaced, an expensive part.

Managed to narrow it down to the fuel pump at rear of engine by putting it into drive with brakes hard on and then brought revs up to put it under load. Managed to get it to make the noise whilst stationery and could get the stethoscope on it. There was nothing obvious with the pump when it was off but the new pump cured the noise. There must have been some wear internally. Slight hiccup 2 weeks after the pump was replaced... engine died at traffic lights and ended up on the back of an AA truck. The plastic cover had come off and shredded the new belt.
