Thumbs Up

Thanks G.W. - thats reassuring and I'm going to go with that approach, and see where it gets me.

Of course the disco-gods are such that it hasn't done it again since writing the original post... typical Rolling Eyes

Just a quick update although it’s over a year late Laughing I finally managed to sort my restricted performance issues out. After looking at the Discovery workshop guide in detail and understanding how the secondary turbo system worked I traced it down to a rubber ‘T’ piece that had split causing a vacuum leak, so a cheap fix in the end and managed to avoid the garage, shame it took me 12 month to find though

Hi,

Only just seen your message, near the throttle body, if you remove your engine cover there’s 3 or 4 rigid pipes, these are vacuum pipe running to the various actuators and solenoids, I initially just removed to pipes from the solenoid located at the front of the engine and tested them with a basic vacuum gauge then when I got no vacuum traced the hose back and found the ‘T’ piece. Hope this makes sense, I haven’t really got any pictures, hopefully it’ll work for you as it was very frustrating for me been worried about restricted performance popping up all the time.

Hi,
I know this is dragging an old thread up a bit but I’ve had a similar problem.

What is the turbo drain pipe that is referred to?

Cheers
Dave

Thanks for that, it would explain why there was a cloud of smoke out of it today.

I’ll add it to my list of things to do

Thanks Dazz, the video is really useful. I need to do mine as it has the original drain pipe and causes a smoke screen when I fire up the secondary turbo!

Steve

Steve, out of interest, what colour smoke was it?

I was driving along the back roads yesterday and had a cloud out the back which was light but couldn’t see if it was white / blue but certainly not black like diesel smoke.

I looked down at the dash expecting to see all sorts of warning lights but all good, and still drives fine. I put the reversing camera on permanent and drove up and down some hills with the throttle hard down but the problem didn’t reappear. Very strange

I had a very similar problem with mine (see here) and *touch wood* the modified drain has solved it. Managed a 2000 mile European trip dragging the tintent around la belle France this month with ease. No black smoke, full power, full steam ahead. Thumbs Up

My dealer did the mod for about £350 (main agent prices, but after a significant jousting match with the haggling stick) so I'd suggest that as your first port of call.

My Indy did the mod for £140.

Its a light smoke, probably grey/blue in colour, but it only appears when you are accelerating reasonably quickly, so not always easy to tell. Like you said, not the thick black smoke my Mondeo TDCi produces. Once you've cleared it out you probably won't get the smokescreen again until you've turned back into Miss Daisy for a while.

If you are reasonable confident with the spanners it is easy to check if you have the old/original pipe fitted. You just need to remove the 10 13mm bolts that hold the sump shield in place. I'm guessing mine hadn't been removed for a while as I needed to get my long breaker bar onto some of the bolts, plus the trusty Irwin bolt removers for 3 that had slightly rounded heads. Once that is removed it is quite easy to see the oil return pipe.

Kudos to Dan at Duckworths who very quickly answered my PM about the parts which should be arriving next week. Thumbs Up

Regards,
Steve

That would fit in with what happened. I’ve used it for a week or so just pottering back and for to work which isn’t very far at all. I was stuck behind something slow on the way to where I was going but had a free run on the way back, and accelerated hard on the way up a hill after pulling in for a car.

I hope it’s that anyway! Any idea how much the bits are? Surprised they didn’t do it on a recall

The price from Dan at Duckworths was under £100, so well worth doing in my opinion. It looks to be a reasonable DIY job too. Hopefully I'll be able to report back the weekend after next.

The parts are:
    LR044556
    LR044555
    LR013235

Steve

This happened again today. Been pootling back and for to work all week and went on a longer journey this evening and after booting it got a cloud of smoke which didn’t return even after blatting all the way home. Does this mean there is excessive wear in the engine or just a foible with the engine design?

Is there a copy of the service bulletin online?
