Overheated engine
We are on a holiday trip in Italy. Now we are waiting for the AA.
The engine is overheated just before the top of a pass at 1800 m.
Suddenly the temperature gauge went to top and the red light came up.
Before turning the engine of I drove 300 m. Then also the oil pressure light went on.
Steam came from under the hood. After cooling down I removed the engine cover, in the middle of the V it is wet. Filling up with water gives a sissing sound in the middle of the V.
When driving up the streep road the fan was working hard. It is 32 degrees Celsius and the Disco is fully loaded.
What could be the problem?

I believe a plastic coolant pipe / water outlet from the block can fail at the front of the V.Stu

Engine is now ruined I'm afraid that last 300meters killed it.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

If the engine is rescued to the extent it runs keep a wary eye on water temp, water and oil levels. Usually when any engine has been severely overheated although the engine will run further damage may have occurred, cylinder head gaskets are the first to blow resulting in overheating, followed by distorted cylinders resulting in lose of power and excessive lose of oil, scoured cylinder liners ditto, it may even cause the turbo to fail prematurely.
This is one thing I always check for when buying a used car, although it is unusual for it to happen to an engine with a viscous fan, it is more predominant in electric fans that fail to cut in after a long winter of not operating.
Take it for a good drive before you set off on a long journey, good luck I hope it did not get hot enough to cause any of the above. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
Could it not be the cylinder head gasket went, which would send temp high and drop oil pressure. It would potentially over-pressure the coolant and find any weak spots, so leak through plastic parts could be symptom rather than cause..

I wonder if it was the same part that failed on angelfire's D3?

And happened whilst up near the top of a mountain in Andorra in a thunderstorm. Recovery was all part of the adventure and certainly makes me think twice about going too far off the beaten track alone.

Yes it is the same part. It is not so wide open as on the picture. But we also did not smoke as much as in the video.
After cooling down the Disco started good to go on the recovery car. Oil level is good although it smelt burned. The oil was only 1000 km used.

Yep' af's failed good and proper.
As soon as af realised what was happening (due to radio calls) he shut down and kept her shut down. Was an interesting mostly downhill recovery, especially when we had lightning all around (us all with CB whips connected to boxes inside the cars) and hail. Needed hitched up to a car in front to get up a steep rise with the track covered in hail.

She was left up the mountain at the ski station and repired in situ the next day. Well when you need good access you need good access!!

Filled up with pre-mix coolant and off she went, none the worse for the event.

That's aan bigger adventure than ours. Did you have a new part the next day high in the Pyrenees?
Or could you put the part together?

No was a 3 hour dash on rubbish roads and really bad weather that afternoon by another of our group to near Barcelona for a new part, and back to the campsite late that night.

It was the same part as at the picture. Also the fuel return was melted.
Now it is repaired but after the testdrive of the dealer the pressure in the cooling system is too high. They renewed again the fluid but it didn't help. So the conclusion is a blown head gasket.
