Turbo not cutting in below 2500rpm

I've had a screeching sound from the righthand side of the engine compartment (LHD car) when under load between 1500-2500 rpm for some months. Just started to stay "screechy" until 3000rpm and now no power until about 2500rpm. If I keep the revs up there the whole thng runs sweetly but it makes me a bit lively around the French country roads which are my domain!

I pulled off the large tube which goes from top of the rad to the bottom of the engine area (where it was rather "gunky") but couldn't find any splits. Ran the fingers over the rest of the pipework down there and couldn't find any obvious damage.

Anyone had similar? Got any pointers?

Are you in the UK with your car ? If so where ?

It's the exhaust pipe at the rear of the engine
which goes from one side to the turbo

Pete, thanks for your reply. The beast is back in France. As it is a LHD everything is Censored about face (eg, the emergency release for the EPB is not under the small panel behind the EPB lever, but sitting where it would be on a RHD vehicle but requiring the removal of the whole plastic cover to find it!).

Mikey, thanks for the video. As mentioned above mine is LHD so when I am sitting in the driver's seat the screech appears to come from behind the glove box (who wears gloves when driving?).

Also, used your info on releasing the EPB last month. Took me two goes but it works a treat now.

Crossover is in good condition.....

Managed to inspect the crossover pipe and it is in good nick apart from a bit of carbon evidence at the manifold.....could this be causing the screech?

Cleaned the MAP sensor and freed up the turbo gate (from above using info elswhere on this site).

Put it all back together and still no improvement. Turbo is not cutting in until 2500 rpm. When it does surge in it runs smoothly with no black smoke out of the pipe.

Anyone got any ideas?

Just checked some historical posts....

.....and found some threads about egr blanking. I'll try and order some and meanwhile try Mickey's trick with some 2p coins (which I think I have in stock somewhere!).

MAF sensor caused loss of power

So, an update for the records.

My main concern was the lack of power below 2500 rpm so I bought and fitted the egr blanking kit.....made no difference except to reduce the plumbing on top of the engine and make me feel clever as it only took about half an hour.

Then I spent some time searching this excellent resource and found reference to the MAF sensor (mass air-flow) which is located on the large pipe exiting the air filter.

Un-plugged the thing and started up the motor, revving smoothly in neutral and pulling smartly in gear! My gob was smacked!

I'm going to research new MAF sensors or fuses for same.

Check fuse number 17 in the engine area fuse box for the MAF.

Thanks for that. Just got around to checking that this afternoon. It is OK.

I am so busy lately that I have yet to pull out the MAF sensor and check it for cleanliness/damage but I aim to get on it this weekend. Fortunately everything runs ok right now.
