Detachable towbar - which bit wears ? |
|
During some other works at a LR service center last I was informed that my 06 D3 needs the towbàr recall doing - apparently it's a day's work to fit a new cross member and fixed hight bar - I've got no problem with that (apart from it being a boat trip and a three day round trip away)
But - they appear to have forgotten to put the detachable one back in the vehicle, they've hidden it very well if it is there.
If the detachable part is fine I want it back as it'll be used on another.
I'm wondering if it's the socket or the mating part of the detachable section that wears ?

I think that if they replace the rear crossmember they retain the detachable tow bar as a matter of course.
I took mine in for the recall and was told it needed a new crossmember and so booked it in for the work which was going to be about four weeks later. When I got back in the Disco I checked and the tow bar wasn't there. I knew I'd need it for a couple of local towing jobs (hay for the horses etc.) in the meantime so went back to reception for it. They returned it to me but I had to sign a disclaimer that I was aware of the issue and that they would take no responsibility.
So, when I did take it in for the new crossmember, I left the detachable one at home. They fitted a fixed towbar and never asked for the removeable one.

That makes sense - I'd have been happy to have signed a disclaimer, had it been pointed out that they'd confiscated it.
I was rushing for a boat 3 hours drive away, so more fool me for not confirming where they'd left it.
They did a fine job resolving a brake issue, I hope they do an equally fine job of sending it back to me.

Yeah, they didn't tell me either, just lucky I checked before driving home. Mind you, it was only 30 miles for me
Bearing in mind that many people buy these vehicles for towing they really should ask first rather than just leave you to drive off with no tow bar. The form I signed was a pre-prepared one so it was clearly anticipated.
Of course, none of this answers what actually wears. Obviously the socket in the crossmember does, I don't know about the detachable bit.

I don't suppose you've got that disclaimer easily to hand ?
I'll call them tomorrow and see what their response is - it would be good to be able to point them at their own Form LRXYZ if they deny any such disclaimer exists.

Sorry Sean, No. I did have a copy but ditched it once the new towbar was fitted a couple of years back now. It was Guy Salmon in Bristol who did mine. Arthur.

Mine had about 2" play in it!
They had to persuade it off with various weighted hammers so I didn't want mine back!!
Rear cross member and new multi height bar fitted, took 2 days to fit, but they found the spare wheel winch dangerous and changed that too.
Not bad for 5 weeks ownership of an 05 plate.
Just a shame I found out about the recall after I had towed my twin axle caravan to Cornwall wondering what the banging was, and then having to leave it there and return with my old 300TDi to pick it back up!!
