Full blown emergency stop with tintent

Has anyone on here had to do a full blown, 60mph emergency stop with the tintent on the back?

How much of a brown trouser job was it (1 wash, 2 wash, etc)

Its always worth knowing what to expect before something happens.

Several years ago when I had the D3 I was towing a single axle caravan on a road and a Police car came out of a side turning straight in front of us. I hit the brakes very hard and swerved onto the other side of the road, luckily late at night and not much traffic about
it was a real brown trouser moment but the outfit stayed virtually in line with no real concerns, the Mrs was a bit shocked to be woken from her sleep to the violent car movement and at my shouting abuse at the cooper in the car who did not even stop or acknowledge us

Did it with a horse trailer that was around 1500kg. Very shaken up, smoke from the trailer tyres but the Disco was fantastic, it didn't move and stopped much quicker than you'd expect, I was very lucky and even luckier that the horse loaded ok to come home.

My experience is slightly different.
Picked up a 1500 kg caravan a couple of weeks ago, after having owned a motorhome for a while, was driving at some speed. Came of the M4 to go onto the M5 ( quite a sharp long bend) and forgot that I was towing.
That was my dirty trousers moment Whistle , but the car and the caravan pulled through it without any problems. Thumbs Up

Slightly differently, I had a front near side blow out, lane 3 of the M61, overtaking slower traffic.
Discovery was incredibly stable which was more than could be said for my nerves. Shocked
Soon got onto the hard shoulder but was shaking like a good 'un.

A caravan or trailer with properly adjusted brakes and correct nose weight will do most of its own braking after the initial push in of the actuator rod.

If you are in a straight line then all should be well however if on a curve things can get a tad difficult but that's the same with any heavy braking while turning.

In hilly country you could find your caravan or trailer's brakes get very/too hot as it brakes on downhills while you are just on the overrun because it leans on the tow bar and applies its brakes. That's worth keeping a wary eye on.

As above done quite a few with a twin axle on the back. As long as you are in a straight line it behaves fine.

I did the "ELK" test a good few years ago in a 200 tdi Discovery. They didn't come with anti roll bars as standard. I had a tonne of cement in a trailer behind me when a car stuck its nose out on a bye road. Discovery held perfectly but I can always remember looking in my wing mirror and seeing the trailer wheel 2-3 feet in the air. I don't know how it didn't go over or burst the tyre when it landed. Never said anything to my father but he gave out to me that the bags were all over the trailer.

Yes had a situation last year on the way back from Islay. Someone got in the way on my approach to a roundabout and I had to brake very suddenly and hard. The abs cut in on the D4, the caravan made an almighty thump and locked its wheels. It stayed straight and the only damage was a locker burst open and spewed it's contents along the caravan.

The caravan is a 3 yr old Elddis Affinity with the anti snake gizmo. Whether that helped or not I don't know.

Had to do a 40mph to nothing after a cyclist (second one) came across the road in front of me, ditto to the thump but apart from that no dramas stopped perfectly in a line.

If the D2 can manage this with its EBD system, I'm sure the D3/D4 will be fine Thumbs Up

There is a video of a guy towing a caravan which has Tyron safety bands fitted it has explosive charge on one caravan wheel which they blow. At 70mph then does E stop whilst putting his hands out of the sunroof Shocked On an airfield not public highway. Have Tyron bands on my caravan not tried to repeat his trick myself!

I've done a full on 50mph(ish) to 0 with a twin axle flatbed carrying about a tonne. Its was raining heavy there was a lot of smoke from the trailer, juddering and nasty noise from the ABS but everything held straight. The guy that pulled out on me took off, had to get out the car I felt physically sick and faint for a bit !

Hey Narpy. I trust that this is a 4 lane section of the motorway? If not, what were you doing in lane 3?

I'm always amazed at the number of people towing trailers who use the third lane of a three lane motorway. They seem to ignore the 60 MPH limit for trailers and the ban on towing in the third or fourth lane.

Not suggesting you've broken the law Narpy, but have thrown this in, in case some of our forum members are not aware of the rules pertaining to trailers on the motorway.
