very probably not...
The trailer would have to be approved at that weight and an appropriate recognised plate or supporting documentation supplied.
Pretty sure you would be hard pushed to achieve that.
Caravans and mass produced trailers / chassis are type approved and labelled to suit.
Not sure how this applies to home built though?If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

You can downgrade the rating. It just needs 're plating. Going the otherwise however is very difficult.

I passed my test in Ireland in 1994 and when asked for b+e to be added to my licence was told no to sit test .Even if passed b before 1997 has to be passed in UK

I passed my test nearly sixty years ago. Gave up caravanning when the series 2a was nicked. Don't understand all these new regs. Don't much understand anything. 2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.

It's right on one part but doesn't mention the fact that a 2000kg car could tow a 1500kg trailer under the 'can't exceed 3500kg train.
So for example
I used to tow with my 2200kg Nissan xtrail a 1500kg Ifor downplated to 1300kg.
However, I couldn't tow this on my discovery and had to take the b+e although I could tow my small garden trailers as they were under 750kg, braked or unbraked is irrelevant, people say unbraked as typically you see brakes only on trailers over 750kgMY2023 Discovery 5 R-Dynamic 3.0

Because you can tow a trailer that exceeds 750KG provided the total train MAM doesn't exceed 3500KG.
It's been covered multiple times in this thread already, with links and quotes to .Gov websites that quote this rule:
Licences issued from 1 January 1997
If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 January 1997 you can:
drive a car or van up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM
tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

I now work in the construction and utility industry and it's a real nightmare the number of lads who are unaware of the regs.... we are constantly having issues with 'youngsters' not being able to tow a trailer or mini digger especially behind a transit!

That depends, if a trailer is plated below its max (as many caravans are) then the manufacturer can supply certification and new plate to the maxium, at a cost of course.==================================

If you want even more issues ask them about the difference in speed limits between a transit and a car

I went on a speed awareness course a while ago and no one else in the room realised that vans have different speed limits, in fact apart from HGVs they were mostly umaware of speed limits other than those posted!==================================
