trip Norway aug 17

did 3840 miles over 24 days up into Norway (only 63 degrees north!) driving from UK - D3 performed as it should and returned average of 27.5 mpg. Only mods made during the trip - were some soft covering on the steering wheel to stop hands having to grip the wheel leading to a bit of stiffness and also a piece of kip mat on door to cushion right elbow. Otherwise great bit of kit. Pre trip mods - were - Mini iPad with Topo maps for close up mapping - for not on the move and a 6 inch garmin for road stuff. Dog guard and a platform in the boot to take 4 wolf boxes. All worked well. Loved driving (and fly fishing) around Norway a very beautiful place even if the weather was not great some of the time.

I like the simplicity of your storage in the back of the disco & the tablets for mapping.
Did you fold down the rear seats to give extra space?
Were you camping and if so - using "proper" camp sites or wild camping?
What was your logic of driving to Norway.... is ferry very expensive or was the journey there part of the holiday?
It would be interesting to see a route map if you have one.
Hope to do something similar before too long Thumbs Up

Logic - no logic just lets go and do it - this was a holiday and you are right - it is expensive in Norway - campsites are reasonable £20 to 25 a night. Hotel rates are reasonable unless in city centres but eating out, drinking, fuel and speeding fines are very expensive! That is why we went self contained - stocked up on beer and wine in Germany. We ended up doing 13 nights camping, 1 night in a hutter and the rest in hotels. Our pattern was dictated by the weather. Our route was Rutland to euro tunnel - night in Holland (Arnhem) night in Germany near Danish border (Tarp) and then a night in Krtistiansand after the fast cat from top of Denmark. Kristiansand to Bergan via UNWH site at Rjukan and lot so other winding roads. Bergan then across fjord land ending up in Alesund (great viking ship museum) and then up to Kristiansund (63 north) - Atlantic Road - back down to Olso, headed down to Copenhagen - few nights on Tjorn island near Gothenberg (and via UNWH Tanum rock art - amazing). Copenhagen (world class national museum including viking ship and arctic/Greenland exhibits) to Bremerhaven via Elbe Ferry, night in Deflt Holland to home! In the middle row seats we had a big coolbox and water j can behind my seat - both strapped down. Middle seat - an overnight bag and coats etc. Only extra was a blow up canoe - a Sevylor job - on the seat behind passenger seat. Fishing rods all on the dog guard as well. If you are thinking of going the scenery is superb and some crazy roads and brilliant engineering - bridges, tunnels, ferries etc. In Fjordland you slow down 100 miles is worth 250! and some of the roads are very narrow so you have to concentrate on driving. See photo of the Trollstigen road - great experience!. Next time may just head up the route from Oslo to the north when wild camping would be possible (I did take a portapotti and tent ) so we were capable. Great adventure. Including UK - 8 countries.

I've heard lots of good things about Norway.

I'm hoping to do Norway with my son next year for his first camping holiday (if my wife let's me). Hoping to get to the Arctic circle and back in 21 days if it's possible.

Any places along the way that you would recommend not missing?

Just a general question, are you allowed to travel with the gas canister inside the vehicle? I thought it had to be mounted outside?

I have been to Norway every 5 years since 1985, last time in 2015 in my Series One LR. Agree the prices can be steep but last time found a B&B at about £22 per night with enough spare food for lunch as well. Would recommend the trip to anyone. Weather can be variable but heavy rain produces fantastic waterfalls!

Norway

If anyone is planning on coming to Norway, you can get in touch with me. I have been living
here for over 20 years now, and there is still so much I havn't seen. But I can point you in the right direction and make sure you don't miss out on some awesome sites.
I live near Stavanger and this area of Norway is well worth a visit. Lysebotn is much better than Trollstigen, but not so well known Wink
Wild camping is no problem here either and perfectly legal, so no need for hotels or campsites.
Glad you enjoyed yourself, and yes fuel, drink and eating out are very expensive Big Cry
