Well you may be right, that we are applying an Elastoplast to a potential fracture.

To add to the problem, the fixing point(on my D4) not only has a large aperture more than 12mm, requiring larger washers but it’s upper surface isn’t flat...so the bolt and washer don’t sit squarely. It really needs a chamfered big washer to make the bolt go through straight and true.

That said, I feel it does add an extra layer of resistance (and movement constraint). It is of course, designed to just keep the towball in the right position to allow its own locking mechanism to remain engaged. It’s not suppose to take over support of the weight of the caravan.

I say 'caravan' because, as I was told by LR, this type detachable towball is not recommended for anything heavier... or that will be used frequently and on rough terrain.

It hasn’t removed all the angst, so I will still check it for movement and stability before each trip.
