Fell off bike 4 times over the weekend !!!
What a weekend popped out for a quick spin on my bike Friday , I have fitted cleats to my old bike as they are supposed to improve your efficiency but when you start out you might have a few mishaps EG falling off !!!
Riding on an old railway track arrived at a gate but had forgotten to unclip my feet, bang
get back on riding down the road the front tyre explodes on a corner bang on the floor again
dust myself down ride home with not more damage than bruised pride
Fast forward to Sunday my wife said do you fancy going for a bike ride down on the tow path by the river ,great idea I said so off we go get to the first gate I am in front and the pedals on it have fitted can be used as a normal pedal or a clip type and my shoe had engaged into the clip unknown to me net result bang on the floor again soft landing this time wife wet herself or close to
less than a mile down the cycle path a lady not watching what her dog was doing had let it run across the path in front of me no option slam the brakes on ,big bang this time plenty of pain and claret this time wife not laughing .We had a coffee and I went home a bit sore but still in working order ,
sat in the chair got bored by 7pm and said I am going back out bike a bit of kill or cure 15 miles later all's well .Bed time comes and as we go up stairs only one knee is working heat pads, coolpads and Voltarol still only one knee working ,the alarm goes of its time to get up or as in my case not get up 10 minutes to put on my sock ,3 days on still a little sore and no exercise will try tomorrow perhaps Land Rover 90 - deceased

Ah the joys of cleats
At least you didn't go for a swim when near the river, that could have been even less pleasant (or more amusing for spectators).Rob Smith

Sounds like you need SPD multi-release cleats. I've had a couple of "PANIC!!" moments but the furious foot waving/pulling is enough to disengage and keep my dignity intact 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

I was approaching some traffic lights a few months back, Andy they turned to red. There was a girl on a road bike in full Lycra in front. So decided to just coast to a halt behind her and let her have the front of the cue.
Anyway as she pulled up her movements became more and more desparate as she tied to get her foot out, but she failed. Over she went with a crash!
Of course I got out to help her, and she was embarrassed but ok.
So funny to watch!

My experience proves to me (that certainly for mountain biking) to get an open a pedal as possible.
I run with Crank bros 'egg beaters' and never have an issue releasing.
I fancied a change once though and bought some high end Shimanno's (when upgrading the bike components to xtr - what a waste of money btw).
I was on my own, in a remote forest, riding along a 6' ridge with steep drops either side, I lost my grip/nerve, was frantically trying to unclip (so that my fall would be free from being attached to the bike - for fear of broken limbs).
You guessed it, I couldn't release and fell with the bike still attached and tumbling down on top of me.
Thankfully I was ok apart from a few minor cuts and grazes.
But all this was because the pedals had filled with mud and been compacted through clipping/unclipping through the ride.
Went back to 'egg beaters' after that and won't use anything else. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Just in case stabilisers don't work, With the added advantage that you'd float better if you find yourself in the drink! MY15 D4 Causeway Grey

I remember the first time I rode with spd pedals
Even more fun when you get sand on the bottom of your shoes -fell into a bush at a set of lights in Holland.

@Syd.... for the first time in my life, I wish I was a saddle. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.
I'll never forget when MrsH first had cleats on her bike, everytime she stopped, she'd unclip her one foot and promptly lean over the opposite side - splatt!
I lost count how many times she did it that first day - the hardest part was trying to keep a straight face and sound sincere when asking "are you ok dear?" - but my the air was blue at times
Nowadays neither of us would ride bikes without cleats, it's sooo much easier, so keep persevering MZ, it's worth it.LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.
