For the 2.7 same procedure as per 3.0.

From page 970 of the WORKSHOP MANUAL (click me to download)

Cylinder Head Gasket
The cylinder head gasket is a three-layer, laminated steel type and is available in five different thickness. The choice of gasket thickness is dependent on the maximum piston protrusion. Gasket thickness is identified by serrations cut into the front end of the gasket:

To calculate the correct cylinder head gasket thickness, each piston must be measured at two points, with an average of the two measurements taken to determine the piston protrusion. The highest of the three measurements will determine the gasket required for that particular cylinder head.

• NOTE:
The difference between the maximum and minimum protrusion measurement in any one bank should not be greater than 0.1mm. It is permissible to have a different grade of gaskets between the LH and RH banks.

I`m loosing coolant quite regularly and a local garage has said this may be the head gasket !
The theory being that because there are no obvious puddles that I must be loosing it internally not externally and in the coolant you can vaguely smell diesel!
Does this sound right to you guys and if so should I get it done sooner rather than later ?
Also Gaskets and labour would be what cost ball park ?
Thumbs Up

Few people told me you always use the thickest one on a diesel

Suppose there more there to crush and seal. I think it may be just to be sure instead of the measuring mess about. These guys are all on a tight schedule.

Why on earth would you ignore the workshop manual on an engine that is made to such close tolerances?

Maybe some of the less recommended companies out there offering "reconditioned" engines would do such a thing to save money, but these tolerances weren't worked out to pass the time. Thumbs Up

Gaskets all cost the same. 0.2mm in it, not gonna make a huge difference id say, but its what they keep in stock

As above there are other places to loose coolant other than the head gasket. Is there blowback in the coolant tank when the engine is running?
I'd rule everything else out first before the heads.
