As posted elsewhere my MY16 D4 was parked in the Gatwick long stay for a week. When I drove out of the parking bay the spare wheel fell from under the car. Obviously the thieves had partly severed the cable and either given up or were disturbed.
So, I ordered a plate from Uncle Ray and a replacement winch. However the plate was not really necessary as the latest version of the winch has a tube added that covers the wire cable when winched up and makes it impossible to get at, see below, the middle bit is different. The part nr is LR093370 which I think is the same as the old part n.
The old winch looks like this:
It was easy to fit, just 6 bolts although I temporarily removed the plastic adblue tank cover to make it easier to get at.
This is clearly a design fault that LR have finally fixed so anyone with an adblue D4 should ask for the new winch to be retrofitted, FOC.
However, there is another way. Get hold of a piece of tubing (scaffold pipe?) with an internal diameter of 5cm and length of around 18cm. Feed the cable through the pipe before you attach it to the wheel. When you winch it up the pipe will cover the exposed cable and make it very very difficult to cut.Volvo XC60 - does all that the D4 should have done

You think that silly little tube will stop them? They've been cutting those off since it was introduced. Assuming you mean that spring thing?
No not the spring thing, that was visible from beneath the car on the D3 and non adblue D4 versions. The latest winches have a hardened steel cover. The new bit is the bit in the middle, look at the photo.
If you took time to think about it rather than jumping to rubbish it....Volvo XC60 - does all that the D4 should have done

I'll not get into a debate over the tube HOWEVER the tube won't stop the other means of attack!
Over time the cable loosens slightly and allows the scrotes to spin the wheel, which in turn twists the cable. Persevere with this and the cable snaps.
My non-adblue RLD protector has been mod'ed to incorporate 3 layers of smooth plastic so that the wheel will spin without the cable twisting (my theory anyway !) so that hopefully that method won't work.

I now see the extra bit. Scafolding tube sounds better.

Pretty sure a tube was added to late D3 winches too, it's not a replacement for a RLD plate.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti
Any issues with the site let me know!
I have seen the latest non adblue winch. The spring is covered by a hardened steel tube but without an RLD plate it would be possible to use an angle grinder on it. Of course the adblue cars have the wheel face down (to accommodate the adblue tank) and without an RLD plate one can get a hand between the spokes but no angle grinder so the latest version with a tube to cover the cable should be quite effective.Volvo XC60 - does all that the D4 should have done

Clearly. I agree.
Can't be too over cautious by adding an RLD too

I have an RLD plate and obviously stops cable being cut. What I have always been concerned about however is the centre hub of the plastic cover under the spare being cut all the way across. The winch cable fits into this hub and it's the only thing actually holding the wheel up.
Is there anything to protect against this?Gary

Although the cover is plastic, inside is a steel tube and three lugs that locate into the wheel nut holes. If they try and cut that it would be quite difficult and may well damage the alloy wheel.Volvo XC60 - does all that the D4 should have done

The problem being that the revised winch wasn’t fitted during production of the D4. To prevent theft, I’d suggest it was easier to retain the existing winch and fit the RLD protector.

Knowing what I know now I'd ask my dealer to make it secure FOC and failing that I'd get an 18cm length of scaffold pipe (internal diameter > 5.5cm) and fit it!Volvo XC60 - does all that the D4 should have done
